🇬🇭 ESC Volunteering in Ghana 💜 Health Education, Gender Equality & Community Empowerment in Upper East Ghana 🌍

High maternal mortality, teenage pregnancy, girls dropping out of school, women underrepresented in leadership — the Nabdam district in Upper East Ghana faces a specific and serious set of challenges. This ESC placement is for someone who wants to do something about that, directly, in the community where it matters most.

Kongo Community Development Organisation (KoCDA) is a community-based organisation in Kongo, Upper East Ghana, working to improve health awareness, promote gender equality, and strengthen inclusive participation among young people and women in the Nabdam district. They are looking for a European volunteer to support community education, youth empowerment, and advocacy as part of the RISE project — Reinforcing Inclusion through Solidarity and Empowerment.

What Is This Role About?

The challenges KoCDA works on are interconnected: limited access to accurate sexual and reproductive health information, high maternal mortality, teenage pregnancy, unequal access to education for girls, and women’s underrepresentation in decision-making. As a volunteer, you will support the organisation’s efforts to address these issues through community education, advocacy, and youth engagement — working alongside local teams and community members in a context that requires cultural sensitivity, patience, and genuine commitment.

💊 Supporting health promotion and community education initiatives in the Nabdam district

♀️ Promoting gender equality and inclusive participation for women and girls

👧 Youth empowerment — engaging young people with accurate information on sexual and reproductive health, mental health, rights, and gender equality

📢 Supporting advocacy work to improve health awareness and challenge gender-based discrimination

🏫 Communication and outreach with schools and community groups

🤝 Contributing to the broader mission of the RISE project in vulnerable communities

Who Should Apply?

🔹 Age: 18 to 35 years old

🔹 Residency: Must reside in an eligible country (EU Member State, North Macedonia, Iceland, Liechtenstein, or Turkey)

🔹 Must have completed the compulsory Humanitarian Aid Volunteering training

🔹 Must not have participated before in individual Humanitarian Aid Volunteering

🔹 When combined with any previous EU volunteering, total duration cannot exceed 12 months

🔹 Previous experience in health initiatives and gender equality activities is a bonus

Training & Support

🎓 Structured training from KoCDA on health promotion, gender equality, youth engagement, and communicationwith schools and community groups

🏘️ Orientation introducing the local community, KoCDA’s mission, and the social and cultural context of Ghana’s Upper East Region

🤝 Hands-on guidance, reflection meetings, and mentoring throughout the placement

Accommodation, Food & Practical Details

🏠 Volunteers stay at NDAHA Guesthouse — a private lockable room with toilet, shower, fan, running water, and electricity

🍳 Shared kitchen and fridge available

📍 The guesthouse is a 5-minute walk from the village centre and 7 minutes from the KoCDA ICT Centre

📶 Reliable mobile service and good internet in the area

🚌 Local buses to Bolgatanga run frequently

🛒 Kongo has a market every third day plus daily kiosks — Bolgatanga offers more shops and food options

🍽️ Volunteers can try traditional Ghanaian dishes and seasonal local fruits and vegetables
