Twenty seven European Solidarity Corps volunteering placements are open right now across eleven countries, and every one of them covers your flights, your accommodation, your food, your insurance and a monthly allowance. France carries seven of them, Italy five, Portugal and Türkiye three each. Two sit outside Europe entirely: a reforestation project in Kenya and an intercultural festival in French Guiana, on the northern coast of South America. The work ranges from planting trees in Kosovo to running an escape game at a medieval castle, from supporting deafblind adults in Portugal to teaching disaster preparedness in Türkiye. At Youth Works Hub we publish the eligibility list for every placement, because ESC calls are often restricted to a handful of sending countries and there is no point falling in love with a project you cannot apply to. If the programme itself is new to you, what the European Solidarity Corps actually is takes five minutes and saves you a lot of confusion.
Eight of these are worth opening first. The Kenya placement is a short term team project on waste segregation and tree planting in schools, and it is open to applicants from 31 countries, one of the widest lists in this batch. The French Guiana project puts you inside a festival celebrating the territory's mother tongues and cultural diversity, which is about as far from a standard European volunteering year as this programme goes. Two French castles are recruiting: one wants you to build an escape game, educational workshops and a Murder Party as cultural mediation tools, the other wants help maintaining the castle gardens and making wooden games for visitors. The Kosovo project is physical and concrete, planting shade trees and building a learning space for local children from the garden beds up. The Portuguese centre for deafblind people is the most demanding placement here emotionally and the most specific: guiding someone across a room, sitting beside them in a weaving workshop. A coastal Greek village needs someone for stray animal care, an open air cinema and community events. And a thirty day team project in Türkiye trains you in disaster preparedness and climate resilience, then sends you out to run awareness campaigns.
Read the eligibility line before anything else, because it varies enormously in this batch. Some placements accept applicants from more than thirty countries. Others accept two. One Portuguese placement takes only Italy and Spain, the Austrian mental wellbeing project takes only residents of Italy, the Italian peace education project takes only residents of Italy, and one Türkiye placement is open only to residents of Azerbaijan and specifically calls for young women who can start immediately. Four placements are marked as soon as possible, which in ESC terms means the host is filling the slot now rather than in three months. European Solidarity Corps volunteering is fully funded, and that phrase has a precise meaning. According to the European Commission, the ESC covers your travel to and from the project through fixed distance band contributions, your accommodation for the whole duration, your food or a food allowance, a free group insurance scheme, language support through the Online Language Support platform, and monthly pocket money paid directly to you. The pocket money rate is set per host country and ranges roughly from €4 to €12 a day in 2026, so a placement in France pays a different daily amount than one in Romania. You are not paid a salary and this is not employment: ESC volunteering is solidarity work with your living costs removed. There is no participation fee at any point, and any project asking you for money is not a genuine ESC placement. What is and is not covered is worth reading once so you arrive with accurate expectations.

Eleven countries, twenty seven placements, and a range of work that is much wider than the phrase volunteering abroad suggests. Roughly a third of this batch is care and inclusion work: two Portuguese centres supporting people with disabilities and deafblind adults, a French community sharing daily life with people with intellectual disabilities, and two Austrian projects on mental wellbeing and human rights. Another third is education: primary and high school support in Portugal, France and Spain, plus youth centres in Romania and Italy. The remaining third splits between environment, with tree planting in Kenya and Kosovo, culture, with two French medieval castles and an Italian museum network, and community life, with a coastal Greek village that needs an open air cinema run and stray animals cared for.
Timing matters more than usual here. Four placements are marked as soon as possible, which means the host is recruiting now and the position may close without warning. One Italian project closes on 25 September. Then October fills up: two on 4 October, four on 5 October, one on 9 October, four on 10 October, one each on 11, 12, 21 and 22 October, three on 15 October, two on 16 October and one on 31 October, with a single Italian placement running to 1 November. If you want to be abroad before the end of the year, the as soon as possible placements and the early October deadlines are the realistic ones, because the selection, the volunteering agreement and the practical arrangements all take time after you are chosen.
Two things separate the applications that get selected from the ones that do not. The first is fit: hosts read motivation letters looking for someone who actually wants to do this specific work in this specific place, not someone who wants to live abroad and picked the first opening. The second is avoiding the errors that sink otherwise good candidates, and the ten most common ESC application mistakes are all fixable in an afternoon. Before you commit, it is also worth knowing exactly what lands in your account each month, because pocket money is set per country and the 2026 rates are published openly.
