🇧🇷 ESC Volunteering in Brazil 🌿 Humanitarian Aid, Permaculture & Community Culture at Umbúntu Social Project 🥁

A poor district of Alvorada, a community and cultural space built on ubuntu philosophy, and a volunteer experience that combines humanitarian aid with hands-on environmental work, capoeira, percussion, and permaculture gardening. This ESC placement takes you well beyond Europe — and into something genuinely different.

ICYE Brazil is inviting young European volunteers to join the SASID Project — a Humanitarian Aid ESC initiative based at the Umbúntu Social Project in Alvorada, near Porto Alegre, Brazil. Umbúntu provides a community and cultural space offering workshops on edible plant processing, handicrafts, capoeira, percussion, and language teaching — all rooted in principles of environmental sustainability and social solidarity.

This placement is organised in partnership with sending organisation ICJA – Freiwilligenaustausch Weltweit.

What Is This Role About?

The project has two connected dimensions. On one side, community and cultural work — workshops, creative activities, and direct engagement with the local community in a poor urban district. On the other, environmentally sustainable practices — farming, permaculture gardening, construction, and manual activities that demonstrate and promote green alternatives. The main aims are to provide humanitarian aid, raise awareness about climate change, and encourage discussions on sustainable futures.

Activities

🌱 Permaculture gardening and farming — hands-on work with organic produce

🏗️ Construction and manual activities as part of the eco-friendly project

🥁 Participating in capoeira, percussion, and handicrafts workshops

🌿 Workshops on edible plant processing and sustainable food practices

🗣️ Supporting language teaching activities within the community

🤝 Direct engagement with the local community in a poor urban district of Alvorada

♻️ Raising awareness about climate change and encouraging discussion on green alternatives

Who Should Apply?

🔹 Age: 18 to 35 years old

🔹 Residency: Must reside in an eligible country (EU Member State, North Macedonia, Iceland, Liechtenstein, or Turkey)

🔹 Available for the full six-month period

🔹 Must have completed the compulsory Humanitarian Aid Volunteering training (face-to-face)

🔹 Must not have participated before in individual Humanitarian Aid Volunteering

🔹 When combined with any previous EU volunteering, total duration cannot exceed 12 months

🔹 Interested in engaging internationally and gaining insight into humanitarian work

🔹 Eager to experience intercultural exchange in a Brazilian community context

🔹 Motivated to create meaningful, lasting experiences while contributing to the local project

Training & Support

💻 Pre-departure training online before leaving

📋 On-arrival training in Brazil upon arrival

👩‍🏫 A knowledgeable mentor supporting the volunteer daily for smooth integration

📊 Mid-term evaluation after 4 to 5 months

📝 Final evaluation before departure

🤝 Follow-up meeting 2 to 3 months after returning home

Accommodation, Food & Transport

🏠 Volunteers hosted safely in a shared flat — hot and cold water, WiFi, washing machine, private and shared spaces

🍳 Breakfast and dinner provided at home on weekdays — lunch and snacks offered by the project. Weekends include all meals at home

🌿 Umbúntu’s focus on organic produce means healthy, sustainable food throughout

🚌 Transportation to and from the project via local bus or Uber

💶 Monthly pocket money: €250
