Art as a bridge. Culture as a tool for connection. In the Favoriten district of Vienna โ one of the city’s most diverse and vibrant neighbourhoods โ the Casa della Cultura Brotfabrik runs a community art project that uses participatory culture to reduce social tensions, strengthen solidarity between residents, and make artistic expression accessible to people who are often excluded from traditional cultural institutions. Associazione Antigรณna is looking for an ESC volunteer from Italy to join this work.
๐๏ธ About the Project
Brotfabrik operates across two venues in Vienna, offering a wide range of cultural events and community initiatives. The project builds bridges between long-term residents and newcomers through art and participatory culture โ running art workshops, repair cafรฉs, concerts, children’s events, and more. The volunteer is not just a helper here โ they are an active participant in community-building processes, encouraged to bring their own ideas and creative contributions to the work.
๐ฏ The Role
As an ESC volunteer, you’ll be involved in the organisation and animation of community events, supporting existing initiatives and developing new ones in direct contact with residents and visitors of the Favoriten neighbourhood. Depending on your interests and skills, the role can take many different shapes.
๐ What You’ll Do
๐จ Support art workshops, repair cafรฉs, concerts, and children’s events
๐ก Bring your own ideas and propose new initiatives emerging from contact with the community
๐ฅ๏ธ Contribute to graphic design, marketing, and communication with visitors and event participants
๐ธ Handle photographic documentation and video production of activities
๐ง Support technical tasks during public events
๐ญ Contribute to conceptual work related to seminars and participatory art projects
๐ Help with decoration and maintenance of the spaces

๐ What the Project Provides
๐ Accommodation provided by the coordinating organisation โ safe and functional, meeting all basic needs
๐ถ โฌ7 per day personal allowance (the standard ESC rate in Austria)
๐ฝ๏ธ Food provided by the host organisation or a separate monthly food allowance
โ๏ธ Full travel reimbursement to and from Italy
๐ Monthly public transport pass valid across all local transport in Vienna
๐ก๏ธ Full insurance coverage throughout the volunteering period
๐ฃ๏ธ Financial support to attend a German language course of your choice
๐ A Brotfabrik tutor providing training and information on the activities
๐งโ๐ซ A personal mentor who knows the context and can mediate between you and the project if needed
๐ 3 official training sessions โ one before departure from Italy, one shortly after arrival, and one towards the end of the volunteering period
๐ค Who Should Apply
The ideal candidate is:
๐ Interested in community work, participatory art, and graphic design
๐ค Open to meeting new people and building relationships with residents and visitors
๐ฌ Has good communication skills, proactivity, and teamwork ability
๐จ Comfortable moving across a wide variety of tasks depending on interests and skills
