Weimar is one of Germany’s cultural capitals โ home to Goethe, Bauhaus, and a living tradition of art, music, and community. The Other Music Academy (OMA) is an empowerment centre running international community arts projects from a building in the heart of Weimar, and they’re looking for an ESC volunteer to help keep that building alive, creative, and open to the community during a major renovation and transformation phase.
๐๏ธ About Other Music Academy
OMA is a multilayered empowerment centre with international community arts projects based in Weimar, Germany. They run an OMAcafรฉ, host concerts and workshops, produce the annual Yiddish Summer festival (yiddishsummer.eu), and operate as a learning community hub. Their building is currently undergoing significant renovation โ and they want to keep it open and active throughout.
๐ฏ The Role
This is a hands-on, creative, and community-facing role. You’ll be co-developing programming for the OMA building, supporting the cafรฉ, working with the social media team, contributing to festival logistics, and developing your own small-scale independent project within the organisation.
๐ What You’ll Do
๐ Co-develop a programme for the use of the OMA building during its renovation and transformation phase
โ Support the team in keeping the OMAcafรฉ open and welcoming to the community
๐ถ Help run concerts and workshops at the space
๐ฑ Work with the social media team to communicate OMA’s activities and community
๐ช Contribute to the implementation of the Yiddish Summer festival โ learning logistics, management, and hosting of a learning community
๐ก Develop a small-scale independent project of your own within OMA
๐ What the Project Provides
๐ Shared flat in Weimar with 2 other volunteers โ private room with shared kitchen and bathroom
๐ฝ๏ธ โฌ313 per month for food (โฌ10.43 per day)
๐ถ โฌ7 per day pocket money provided monthly
๐ Deutschlandticket โ monthly public transport pass valid across all of Germany
๐ฒ A bicycle for inner-city transport if desired โ Weimar is bicycle-friendly
๐งโ๐ซ A personal mentor at OMA for help and advice
๐ Participation in mandatory German National Agency seminars โ on-arrival and mid-term
๐ค Biweekly team meetings and regular feedback sessions
๐๏ธ Additional support with bureaucratic hurdles and working environment issues
๐ค Who Should Apply
OMA is looking for volunteers who are:
๐ก Motivated, flexible, friendly, curious, and self-confident with good communication skills
๐ Ideally with a sense of humor โ they mention it specifically
๐ฃ๏ธ Good written and spoken English โ required
๐ฉ๐ช Basic to good German โ useful given the focus on local community work
๐ ๏ธ Basic skills with management and communication tools
๐ช Prior experience with community or event organising is a plus
๐ From diverse backgrounds โ OMA actively aims for a workplace sensitive to discrimination
