🇪🇸 ESC Volunteering in Spain 🌿 On the Hill Under the Rock — Sustainable Living & Environmental Education Workcamp 🪨

A wooden house in the hills of Asturias. Renewable energy systems. An organic garden. Firewood collection. And a cattle festival in the middle of it all. “On the Hill Under the Rock” is a didactic workcamp run by De Amicitia in collaboration with Fundación Vital — a hands-on, immersive ESC volunteering experience focused on sustainable living and environmental education in one of Spain’s most stunning natural landscapes.

🌍 About the Project

This is a team volunteering workcamp set in the rural municipality of Yernes y Tameza in Asturias, northern Spain. The project combines practical manual work with educational workshops on climate change, ecology, and renewable energy — creating a learning environment that is as much about doing as it is about understanding. Spots are limited to 14 volunteers in total, with a maximum of 2–3 per country.

📋 What You’ll Do

🔧 Practical Tasks

🏚️ Maintenance work — painting, sanding, and repairs on the facility

🪵 Firewood collection for the wooden house

🌱 Organic garden care — tending and maintaining the garden

🌳 Natural space cleanup in and around the site

🐄 Support post-fair cleanup after the local cattle festival (18–20 August)

🎓 Educational Activities

🌡️ Workshops on climate change and its local and global impacts

🌿 Flora and fauna identification in the Asturian natural environment

🪨 Geology workshops exploring the landscape

⚡ Visits to see renewable energy systems — including a hydraulic ram and microturbine in action

♻️ Training on renewable energy, water use, recycling, and basic survival skills

🎁 What the Project Provides

🏠 Accommodation in Fundación Vital’s wooden house under basic but functional conditions

🍳 Food provided — prepared by volunteers in teams guided by camp leaders. Dietary adaptations possible if informed in advance

✈️ Recommended arrival at Oviedo Asturias Airport (OVD) — ALSA bus to Oviedo city takes approximately 45 minutes and costs around €9. Volunteers should ideally arrive in Spain in the morning. Alternatives include Bilbao or Santander airports.
