๐ธ๐ฐ ESC Volunteering in Slovakia ๐ฐ Castle Ruins Excavation & Renovation Volunteer ๐ชจ Archaeology, Heritage & Community, Kysak ๐ธ๐ฐ
Hidden beneath the forest floor in eastern Slovakia, the medieval ruins of Kysak Castle are waiting to be rediscovered โ and you could be part of that story. This European Solidarity Corps team volunteering camp invites adventurous young people to join an archaeological and renovation project, helping to uncover the castle’s buried foundations, clear and restore the surrounding area, and connect with a vibrant international group of volunteers. No experience in archaeology or building is needed โ just curiosity, physical readiness, and a spirit of adventure.
๐ Did You Know? Slovakia is one of Europe’s most castle-rich countries โ with over 180 castle ruins scattered across its hills, forests, and river valleys. Eastern Slovakia in particular is home to a dense cluster of medieval fortifications, many still being explored and restored by volunteers and researchers today. This region was historically a frontier zone between the Kingdom of Hungary and various eastern powers, making it a fascinating landscape of layered history.
What Will You Do?
๐ฐ Support the archaeological excavation of Kysak Castle โ helping to uncover and explore the buried foundations of the medieval castle tower
๐ชจ Carry out renovation and restoration work, clearing the area and transporting materials such as sand, rocks, and water
๐ฒ Work in the forest environment surrounding the castle site โ physical readiness and outdoor comfort are important
๐ Learn about the history of castles in eastern Slovakia from local experts and partners
๐ช Help organise cultural events if they take place during the camp period

๐ Did You Know? Archaeological volunteer camps have become an increasingly popular way for young people to engage with heritage conservation across Europe. Unlike professional excavations, these projects welcome beginners and provide hands-on training โ turning hidden medieval ruins back into living parts of local identity and community memory, one dig at a time.
