๐ฎ๐น ESC Volunteering in Italy ๐ฟ Rural Sustainability & Community Volunteer ๐ Agriculture, Youth Work & Social Innovation, Torrecuso ๐ฎ๐น
Nestled in the rolling hills of Campania in southern Italy, the small town of Torrecuso is the setting for one of the most distinctive ESC opportunities available โ a hands-on immersion in sustainable agriculture, community development, youth work, and rural regeneration. With grape harvests, olive oil production, children’s summer camps, gender-based violence prevention work, and multimedia storytelling all on the agenda, this placement offers a genuinely transformative experience for volunteers ready to embrace rural life and make a real impact in a tight-knit community.
๐ Did You Know? Torrecuso is a hilltop village in the Benevento province of Campania โ a region of southern Italy that is one of Europe’s most important wine-producing areas. The Sannio wine district surrounding Torrecuso produces celebrated varieties including Falanghina and Aglianico, with vineyards that have been cultivated since ancient Roman times on volcanic and clay-rich soils unlike anywhere else in Italy.
What Will You Do?
๐ Facilitate non-formal education activities and support youth workshops, cultural events, and social campaigns in the local community
๐ Take part in sustainable agriculture experiences โ grape harvesting, vine cultivation, olive harvesting, and wine and olive oil production
๐ง Lead and support a children’s summer camp for approximately 6 to 7 weeks during the placement
๐ฌ Conduct community research and contribute to the co-design of social initiatives and projects

๐ช Help organise and run local cultural festivals and community events

๐ Did You Know? Rural depopulation is one of the most pressing social challenges facing southern Italy โ with many small villages losing up to half their population over the past 50 years as younger generations move to cities. Community organisations like Gramigna APS are at the forefront of rural regeneration, using culture, sustainability, and youth engagement to breathe new life into these communities and create reasons to stay.
