Malta is a tiny island with a surprisingly rich natural world โ and a passionate organisation working hard to protect it. This ESC placement puts a camera in your hands and a conservation mission behind everything you create.
BirdLife Malta is one of the leading wildlife conservation organisations in the Mediterranean, dedicated to protecting birds and their habitats across the Maltese islands. They are looking for an audiovisual volunteer to join their international team โ someone who can capture, edit, and communicate the story of nature conservation through photography, video, and visual content.
The placement is coordinated by Associazione Antigรณna and is open to participants from Italy only.
What Is This Role About?
This is a specialist role for someone with real audiovisual skills and a genuine love of nature. You will be producing content for both local and international audiences, working alongside conservation staff during birdwatching camps, managing social media channels, and contributing to the visual identity of one of Malta’s most impactful environmental organisations.
Activities
๐ธ Attending public and press events as a photographer and videographer
๐ฌ Editing photos using Photoshop and producing video content with CapCut and Adobe Premiere Pro
๐ฆ Downloading and organising photo and footage alongside conservation colleagues during bird migration observation camps
๐ฑ Managing video uploads and social media channels
๐๏ธ Archiving, organising, and uploading content to the digital media library
๐จ๏ธ Contributing to the design of printed materials โ promotional flyers, banners, magazines, logos, and educational content
๐ฅ๏ธ Producing graphics and visual content for the website, social media, and advertising
Who Should Apply?
This placement requires a specific technical profile โ alongside the right personal attitude.
๐น Strong and genuine interest in nature and the environment โ this is non-negotiable
๐น Excellent English language skills โ all application materials must be submitted in English
๐น Proficiency in CapCut, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Photoshop is essential
๐น Knowledge of InDesign and Illustrator is an advantage
๐น Extroverted, friendly, and genuinely interested in meeting new people and experiencing a different culture
๐น Keen to improve bird and flora identification skills
๐น Motivated to inspire and educate people about birds and the natural world
๐น Willing to develop administrative, time management, and interpersonal skills
๐น Flexible approach to working hours โ including occasional weekends and long hours when needed
๐น Open to nonprofit working structures and their specific rhythms
๐น Resident in Italy โ this placement is open to Italian residents only

Training & Support
The training offer is structured and layered.

๐ On-Arrival Training a few weeks after arriving in Malta
๐ Mid-Term Evaluation at approximately the halfway point of the volunteering period
๐ Additional internal training specific to the role, provided by the coordinating organisation

Accommodation & Practical Details
๐ Accommodation provided close to the coordinating organisation’s headquarters โ single room, except during periods of high volunteer turnover
๐ก All utility costs covered โ electricity, water, gas, and internet
๐ถ โฌ380 per month for food and personal expenses
โ๏ธ Return travel costs from Italy to Malta reimbursed
๐ก๏ธ EU insurance covering illness and accidents throughout the placement
