A mountain village near Sofia. A Green Education Centre being built from the ground up. Woodworking, garden maintenance, natural materials, and the company of local elderly residents. Association for Shared Learning ELA is looking for 6 motivated volunteers to spend two months in the village of Sturgel — living simply, working with their hands, and helping create a space where children will learn and grow for years to come.
🏡 About the Project
ELA has spent many years working on national and European educational projects, and is now focused on creating a Green Education Centre in the mountain village of Sturgel in Bulgaria. The centre will support non-formal education programmes for children — but first, it needs to be renovated. That’s where the volunteers come in.
⚠️ This is a hands-on, outdoor, physical placement. The building is currently being renovated, and volunteers should be comfortable with basic living conditions in a rural mountain setting.
📋 What You’ll Do
🔨 Maintenance and basic repair work on the building — including woodworking and working with natural materials
🌿 Garden maintenance and renovation work
🪵 Manual labour as needed for the renovation
👴 Communicate and connect with local elderly residents in the village
🎁 What the Project Provides
🏠 Accommodation throughout the 59-day mobility period
🍽️ Monthly food allowance
💶 Pocket money
🚌 Local transport covered
✈️ Flights covered within the project budget
🗣️ Access to the OLS platform for Bulgarian language training
📚 Introductory training related to tasks, plus additional training to evaluate learning outcomes
🧑🏫 Ongoing mentor supervision and support
👤 Who Should Apply
ELA is looking for 6 motivated volunteers who:
💪 Are comfortable with physical, outdoor, manual work
🏕️ Don’t mind basic living conditions in a village during renovation
🌿 Have an interest in ecological restoration, environmental work, and community life
👴 Are open to communicating with elderly residents in a rural community
🌍 Are curious about village life, nature, and the mountains of Bulgaria
