🇭🇺 UN Internship in Hungary 🛡️ Programme Management Intern 🌍 Counter-Terrorism Office, Budapest 🇭🇺
Are you a student or recent graduate in international relations, political science, law, security studies, or a related field — and interested in contributing to UN counter-terrorism work from inside one of Europe’s most vibrant capitals? The United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) is offering two internships in its Countering Terrorist Travel Section, Special Projects and Innovation Branch, based in Budapest, Hungary. Interns will support programme management activities related to countering terrorist travel — including research, data analysis, communications, event support, and stakeholder engagement. Hybrid or in-person. Full-time or part-time. Unpaid. Deadline: 27 March 2026.
🇭🇺 Did You Know? Budapest is one of the most architecturally stunning capital cities in Europe — a UNESCO World Heritage city straddling the Danube, with its iconic Parliament Building, thermal baths, and castle district. It is also a growing hub for international organisations and UN offices, chosen for its central European location, excellent connectivity, and cost-effectiveness relative to Western European capitals. The UNOCT chose Budapest as a key operational base precisely because of its strategic position between East and West.

What Will You Do?

🎨Create designs and visual materials using relevant software — PowerPoint presentations, promotional materials, announcements, flyers, and video production content that conform to UN standards
📣Support the preparation of public information materials — including event concept notes and other communications outputs for the Countering Terrorist Travel Section
🤝Support the organisation of desk-to-desk meetings with regional actors, civil society organisations, Member States, regional organisations, and other entities
🔬Conduct research, assist in data collection, and provide analysis on relevant topics related to countering terrorist travel and international security
🔍Assist in situation monitoring — actively scanning and assessing developments to maintain an accurate and up-to-date understanding of relevant situations
🗂️Assist in maintaining databases and support the review of key reports and publications produced by the section
📝Attend meetings as assigned and produce reports thereof — contributing to the documentation and follow-up of the section’s activities
💡 Did You Know? The United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) was established by the UN General Assembly in 2017 to provide strategic leadership for the implementation of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy. Its Countering Terrorist Travel Section — the unit this internship sits within — focuses specifically on the cross-border movement of foreign terrorist fighters and the use of border management systems, advance passenger information, and biometrics to detect and disrupt terrorist travel. This is one of the most operationally consequential areas of UN security work.
