The United Nations Information Service (UNIS) Nairobi is looking for a Communication and Social Media Intern to support public outreach, media relations, social media management, visual content creation, and SDG communications across Kenya, Uganda, and the Seychelles. What Will You Do?
πΈAssist in photography and videography assignments β producing short videos and visual content in line with current digital audience needs and UN communications standards
π¨Create compelling visual assets using Canva, Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and other design tools for UNIS Nairobi’s social media platforms and website
π±Draft content for UNIS Nairobi’s social media platforms and website β enhancing interactivity and increasing online engagement, including Facebook Live sessions with youth in line with UN advocacy campaigns
βοΈResearch and write short content pieces, stories showcasing the results of UN work from reports, and drafts for outreach events and other UNIS activities
π°Assist in daily media monitoring and gathering newspaper headlines β keeping the team informed on relevant coverage of UN work across the region
πDraft meeting highlights for the UN Communications Group Kenya (UNCG) and UNIS Nairobi β and assist with rapporteur assignments at meetings and events
π€Welcome guests and media personnel at the UNON entrance during major events β and assist with media accreditation and participant registration
πAssist with translation of content and sharing with relevant partners β supporting the multilingual communications work of UNIS across its coverage area

This makes it one of the most geographically wide-ranging UNIS offices in the world, responsible for communicating the UN’s work to three very different national audiences simultaneously. As a communications intern here, you are not just supporting one country’s UN communications β you are contributing to a multi-country, multi-audience strategic communications operation.
Eligibility & Requirements
πYou are enrolled in or have completed a graduate programme (master’s or PhD) β OR you are in the final year of a first university degree (bachelor’s or equivalent). Preferred fields: Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Social Sciences, Graphic Design, or IT
πΈSkills in photography, videography, and editing are desirable β experience uploading content and short videos to social media platforms is preferred
π¨Knowledge of graphic design and photo editing applications β Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere, After Effects, and/or Canva β is desirable
π»Computer literacy in standard software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required
π£οΈFluency in oral and written English is required β knowledge of another official UN language is desirable
πNo professional work experience is required β a closely related field of study is the primary criterion
Practical Information
π°This internship is unpaid β all costs related to travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or their sponsoring institution
πIn-person, full-time position in Nairobi, Kenya β 35 hours per week, 5 days per week
πInterns who are not Kenyan citizens or permanent residents may need to obtain appropriate visa and work authorisation β discuss requirements before accepting any offer
