Do you have a background in circus, gymnastics, dance, theatre, or any performance art โ and dream of spending a year on the wild Atlantic coast of Ireland doing what you love? Galway Community Circus is looking for an ESC volunteer to join their team as a Circus Trainer Assistant. You will co-run classes for toddlers, youth, adults, and families, develop your own creative project, perform in productions, and train new circus skills โ all as part of a vibrant, internationally connected circus community in one of Ireland’s most beloved cities. What Will You Do?
๐ชCo-prepare class schedules and contribute to in-class circus activities โ working directly alongside lead trainers with participants ranging from toddlers to whole families
๐๏ธParticipate in camps and outreach workshops โ bringing circus education beyond the hall and into the wider community
๐คธTrain and develop your own circus artist skills through weekly skill development sessions and practical experience โ this is a placement where you grow as a performer too
๐ญPerform throughout the programme and lead small productions โ you will have real opportunities to perform in front of audiences
๐กDevelop and deliver a personal creative project that contributes something meaningful to the Galway Community Circus community
๐๏ธAssist lead trainers with various administrative tasks and contribute to the maintenance and running of the circus hall
๐ก Did You Know? The ASK training curriculum โ which all volunteers on this placement receive โ was developed over two years through a collaboration of eleven EU circus schools and funded by Erasmus+. It is one of the only structured pedagogical training programmes in Europe specifically designed for circus trainer assistants, giving this ESC placement a level of professional development that goes far beyond most volunteering opportunities.
Accommodation, Food & Travel
๐ Shared house provided for up to 4 ESC volunteers โ three bedrooms (two single rooms and one shared room) with rotation options throughout the year
๐กAll basic bills covered by GCC โ internet, heating, electricity, and maintenance are fully taken care of
๐ฐโฌ11 per day pocket money plus โฌ180 food allowance per month โ provided throughout the placement
โ๏ธTravel support provided in accordance with ESC programme rules
Training & Learning
๐ASK training (Assistant Trainers Sharing Knowledge) โ a structured curriculum developed by eleven EU circus schools and funded by Erasmus+, covering pedagogical methods, theories, and practical trainer skills
๐คธWeekly skill development sessions to advance your circus artistry โ you will leave this placement as a more skilled performer
๐๏ธBasic administration training to support your practical day-to-day role within the organisation

Who Can Apply?
๐ชYou ideally already have skills in circus, gymnastics, theatre, dance, or other performance arts โ this is the most important background for this placement
๐คYou can work as part of a team and are open to working with people from diverse backgrounds โ toddlers, youth, adults, and families all come through the circus hall
โฐYou are flexible around working hours and able to work under pressure when camps, outreach, or productions demand it
๐You are genuinely excited to immerse yourself in the world of circus and community arts for the duration of the placement
