This European Solidarity Corps individual volunteering opportunity is hosted by Initiative et Dรฉveloppement Citoyen (IDC) in Lastours, France ๐ซ๐ท. The project Cafรฉ Vert is a hands-on circular economy initiative transforming coffee waste into new life through oyster mushroom cultivation. Since 2020, ESC volunteers have been an integral part of this long-running, experimental, and impact-driven project that combines environmental action, local economy, and community awareness.
๐ฏ Main Activities & Responsibilities
๐ฒ Collect coffee waste from cafรฉs and restaurants by bike
๐ Mix coffee grounds with mycelium to grow oyster mushrooms
๐ฑ Monitor growth, harvest, and prepare mushrooms for sale
๐งบ Sell products at local markets and engage with the community
๐ชฑ Reuse post-harvest waste in an earthworm farm to create rich soil
๐ฃ Support workshops, events, and communication in the eco-boutique
๐ก Propose new ideas and creative content around sustainability and local agriculture
๐ Accommodation, Food & Local Transport
๐ก Shared rooms (same sex) in an apartment in Carcassonne city centre
๐ Transport related to activities (city โ campsite) fully covered
๐งน Shared responsibilities for cleaning, cooking, and organising the home
๐ Food budget provided for grocery shopping
๐ฅ Emphasis on local, seasonal, non-industrial food โ and very fresh mushrooms!
๐ Training & Learning During the Activity
๐ Full training on mushroom production: from collection to selling
๐ง Learning how to design and communicate workshops & events
๐๏ธ Experience in local markets and customer interaction
๐ Exposure to ethical, sustainable practices and circular economy models
