🇲🇹 ESC Volunteering in Malta 🦅 Nature Reserve Visitor Assistant & Wildlife Education at BirdLife Malta 🌿

Malta’s natural reserves are some of the most important stopover points for migratory birds in the entire Mediterranean. This ESC placement puts you right at the entrance — welcoming visitors, leading guided tours, and helping people genuinely connect with the natural world around them.

BirdLife Malta is the leading wildlife conservation organisation in Malta, managing a network of nature reserves and running public education programmes that bring locals and international visitors face to face with the island’s remarkable biodiversity. As a visitor assistant volunteer, you become the first point of contact between the reserves and the people who come to discover them.

This placement is coordinated by Associazione Antigóna and is open to participants from Italy only.

What Is This Role About?

This role is built around public engagement and nature education. You will be opening the reserves to the public in the afternoons and evenings — including weekends — welcoming visitors, explaining the history and ecology of each site, leading guided tours, and managing the small nature shop. When the reserves are closed to the public during summer months, you will support the site warden in habitat improvement and maintenance work.

🌿 Providing visitors with explanations of the reserve’s history, flora, and fauna

🛍️ Managing a small nature shop and promoting BirdLife Malta membership

🎨 Setting up displays inside the reserve visitor centre

🔭 Preparing binoculars and equipment before opening hours

📊 Compiling visitor statistics and collecting feedback

🔬 Assisting with research work and data entry

🌱 During reserve closure periods: supporting the warden with habitat improvement and maintenance work

Who Should Apply?

🔹 Sociable, friendly, and open — genuinely enjoying meeting new people and building connections

🔹 Interested in improving bird, flora, and species identification skills

🔹 Motivated to inspire and educate others about nature and the environment

🔹 Willing to develop administrative, organisational, digital, and interpersonal skills

🔹 Available to work full-time in close collaboration with the international host team

🔹 Comfortable and enthusiastic about guiding visitors and explaining the secrets of flora and fauna

🔹 Strong English skills — essential for the role and for all application materials

🔹 Resident in Italy — this placement is open to Italian residents only

Accommodation & Practical Details

🏠 Accommodation in the northern part of Malta, close to the nature reserves — single room except during brief high-traffic periods

💡 All utility costs covered — electricity, water, gas, and internet

💶 €380 per month for food and personal expenses

✈️ Return travel costs from Italy to Malta fully reimbursed

🛡️ EU insurance covering illness and accidents throughout the placement
