Vienna is one of Europe’s most liveable cities โ and this ESC placement puts you right inside its community fabric. Associazione Antigรณna and GRENZENLOS are looking for a volunteer from Italy to support Kindergruppen โ parent-led childcare spaces that operate somewhere between a nursery and a community project. If you genuinely enjoy working with young children and want to bring your own ideas and culture into a daily educational setting, this one is worth your full attention.
๐ซ What Are Kindergruppen?
Kindergruppen are parent-initiated childcare spaces โ comparable to nurseries and kindergartens, but with a key difference: they are created and often actively managed by the parents of the children themselves. Professional staff are hired, but parents participate directly in daily operations. Each Kindergruppe has its own character, but the pedagogy is generally informal and child-centred, supporting the development of social, motor, cognitive, creative, and emotional intelligence.
๐ฏ The Role
As an ESC volunteer, your role is to support staff and parents in the day-to-day care and education of the children. This isn’t a highly technical role โ but it does reward initiative. The organisation is specifically looking for volunteers who bring fresh ideas, personal projects, and a genuine piece of their own culture into the Kindergruppe environment.
๐ What You’ll Do
๐ง Support professional staff and parents in childcare and daily educational activities
๐ฎ Assist children during free play and structured activity sessions
๐ Introduce children and parents to aspects of your own culture and home country
๐ถ Accompany children on outings and external activities
๐ก Develop and implement your own personal projects in favour of the children
๐ What the Project Provides
๐ Accommodation provided by the coordinating organisation โ safe and functional, meeting all basic needs
๐ถ Daily personal allowance of 7โฌ per day (the standard ESC rate in Austria)
๐ฝ๏ธ Food provided by the host organisation, or a separate monthly food allowance
โ๏ธ Full travel reimbursement to and from Italy
๐ Monthly public transport pass valid across all local transport in Vienna
๐ก๏ธ Full insurance coverage throughout the volunteering period
๐ฃ๏ธ Financial support to attend a German language course of your choice, plus plenty of in-context language practice
๐ A Kindergruppe tutor who explains activities and provides ongoing training in working with children
๐งโ๐ซ A personal mentor who knows the working context and can mediate between you and the project if needed
๐ 3 official training sessions โ one before departure from Italy, one shortly after arrival in Austria, and one towards the end of the volunteering
๐ค Who Should Apply
The ideal candidate has a genuine enthusiasm for working with children and is comfortable in a support role within a childcare setting. Prior experience is not required โ what matters most is your ability to bring new ideas and personal initiatives that enrich the daily routine of the Kindergruppen. The coordinating organisation gives priority to younger candidates with limited international experience who are eager to open up to the world.
You must also be willing to learn at least the basics of German โ communication with children, parents, and professional staff is central to the role. All application materials must be submitted in English (or German if you speak it).
