The Trustee Chair in Chinese Business and Economics at CSIS is one of Washington’s leading platforms for analysis of China’s economy, industrial policy, and its commercial relationships with the United States and the world. This part-time paid research internship โ with two positions available โ offers a rigorous, hands-on experience in data collection, economic analysis, and policy writing at the cutting edge of U.S.-China economic research. Chinese language skills are a strong plus for one of the two positions.

China is now the world’s largest manufacturer and second largest economy โ and its industrial policy, known as “Made in China 2025” and its successor strategies, has reshaped global supply chains in semiconductors, electric vehicles, clean energy, and advanced technology. Understanding China’s economic direction has become one of the most consequential analytical challenges in Washington policy circles today.
What Will You Do?
๐ Collect data on industrial policy โ including firm-level data and government budgets in China and other economies
๐ฌ Conduct research on industrial policy literature and news in China and beyond
๐ Collect and organise macroeconomic, trade, and financial data for China and major economies
โ๏ธ Assist in qualitative and quantitative research, analysis, and writing for publications
๐ Write event summaries and draft communications materials including newsletters and social media content
๐๏ธ Provide logistical and administrative support for research projects and events
๐ป Apply data analysis and web scraping skills where relevant (a strong plus)
๐ Did You Know? Washington D.C. has become the global epicentre of China economic analysis โ home to dozens of think tanks, government agencies, and research institutions tracking everything from Beijing’s state subsidies and technology policy to its Belt and Road investments and financial sector reforms. Analysts who can combine Chinese-language skills with rigorous data analysis are among the most sought-after professionals in the field.
Who Can Apply?
๐ At least a current undergraduate senior โ graduate students preferred; minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 U.S. scale (or equivalent)
โ๏ธ Must be legally eligible to work in the United States and able to work on-site in Washington D.C.
๐ Must be able to commit to 20 hours per week (part-time)
๐ Academic or professional background in China’s political economy, international trade and finance, macroeconomics, or technology
๐ป Familiarity with Excel and experience in data collection, cleaning, and visualisation is required
โ๏ธ Strong research, analysis, and writing skills in English
๐จ๐ณ Strong Chinese-language skills are sought for one of the two positions โ but lack of Chinese is not disqualifying for applicants with strong data skills
๐ง Data analysis and web scraping skills are a strong plus
๐ค Able to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple priorities under tight deadlines
Compensation
๐ต $18.00/hour โ current undergraduate students
๐ต $19.00/hour โ candidates holding a bachelor’s degree
๐ต $20.00/hour โ candidates holding a master’s degree
