CSIS Congressional and Government Affairs is the bridge between world-class think tank research and the halls of power on Capitol Hill β and this paid summer internship puts you right at the centre of that work. You’ll help strengthen CSIS’s relationships with Congress, support policy briefings, track legislation, and promote cutting-edge research to key policymakers. If you’re a self-starter who thrives in fast-paced environments and wants to understand how foreign policy and national security analysis actually reaches decision-makers, this is the internship for you.
π Did You Know? Capitol Hill β home to the U.S. Congress β is one of the most consequential legislative hubs in the world. Over 535 elected members of Congress are supported by thousands of staff, researchers, and policy professionals who shape legislation affecting global security, trade, diplomacy, and human rights. Think tanks like CSIS play a critical role in this ecosystem, translating complex research into actionable policy guidance for lawmakers.
What Will You Do?
βοΈ Draft and copyedit official correspondence on behalf of the Congressional Affairs team
ποΈ Assist with event preparation and staffing for both public and private CSIS briefings and events
π¬ Support programme research and analysis of congressional activities and legislative developments
π Track relevant congressional actions, hearings, and legislation on key foreign and security policy issues
ποΈ Support long-term projects including background research, proposal writing, and data gathering
π¬ Draft and format programme mailings and maintain the accuracy of mailing lists
π€ Provide general administrative support to the full Congressional Affairs team
π Did You Know? Congressional affairs roles β sometimes called government relations or legislative affairs β are among the most sought-after entry points into the Washington D.C. policy world. Professionals in this field serve as the critical link between research institutions, advocacy organisations, and elected officials, translating complex analysis into briefings and communications that directly influence lawmaking.
Who Can Apply?
π Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
βοΈ Excellent research, writing, and copyediting skills β able to communicate clearly and concisely in both written and verbal form
β‘ A self-starter who thrives in fast-paced, dynamic environments and can manage multiple tasks simultaneously with strong attention to detail
π€ Strong interpersonal skills and a genuine willingness to work collaboratively as part of a team
π General knowledge of international affairs and an interest in U.S. Congressional and government processes
π‘ Able to exercise professional judgment, sensitivity, and creativity in response to changing needs and situations
π Experience with Excel, database management, or email marketing platforms is desirable
ποΈ Political or nonprofit experience is a plus
βοΈ Must be legally eligible to work in the United States
Compensation
π΅ $18.00/hour β current undergraduate students
π΅ $19.00/hour β candidates holding a bachelor’s degree
π΅ $20.00/hour β candidates holding a master’s degree
