The United Nations Department of Peace Operations is seeking a Knowledge Management Intern to support the development and outreach of the UN Security Sector Reform & Governance Knowledge Hub β a critical resource for UN personnel working on peace operations worldwide. This unpaid internship is available in a hybrid, fully remote, or in-person format at UN Headquarters in New York, making it one of the more flexible UN internship opportunities currently available.

The UN Department of Peace Operations currently oversees some of the world’s most complex peacekeeping and special political missions β deploying tens of thousands of uniformed and civilian personnel across conflict-affected regions in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and beyond. Its work on Security Sector Reform helps post-conflict states rebuild police, military, and justice institutions that are accountable, effective, and respectful of human rights.
What Will You Do?
ποΈ Support the development of the UN Security Sector Reform & Governance Knowledge Hub (SSR-KH) in SharePoint
π Source SSR documents and videos from all 15 members of the UN SSR Inter-agency Task Force and upload them to the Knowledge Hub
π Serve as the SSR-KH point of contact β responding to information requests from UN personnel across the system
π£ Support outreach and promotion of the SSR Knowledge Hub within the wider UN system
π Monitor usage of the Knowledge Hub and evaluate the effectiveness of the knowledge management system
βοΈ Assist with knowledge management and organisational learning β including drafting lessons learned studies and practice notes on UN peace operations work in SSR
π Support the organisation of the UN SSR Annual Workshop “CommonConnections”

Knowledge management has become one of the UN’s most strategic priorities in peacekeeping β ensuring that hard-won lessons from missions in South Sudan, the DRC, Mali, and elsewhere are systematically captured, shared, and applied to future operations. Effective knowledge systems can directly save lives by helping field personnel avoid past mistakes and replicate proven approaches.
Who Can Apply?
π Currently enrolled in the final year of a bachelor’s degree, or in a master’s or PhD programme β or a recent graduate at any of these levels
π Field of study closely related to knowledge management, peace operations, international affairs, security sector reform, or a relevant discipline
π£οΈ Fluency in spoken and written English is required β French is an asset as a UN working language
π» Good knowledge of MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams
π± Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts
π Ability to design surveys and polls
π« Applicants who have previously completed six months in total as a UN intern across any UN Common System are not eligible
π« Close relatives of active UN Common System staff members are not eligible to apply

Practical Information
π° This internship is unpaid β all costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or their sponsoring institution
π Full-time: 35 hours per week β Part-time: 20 hours per week
