This paid summer internship places you at the centre of that work, contributing to research, drafting policy materials, and supporting a programme that shapes how policymakers think about one of America’s most critical alliances.

Japan hosts approximately 54,000 U.S. military personnel across dozens of facilities, making it the largest U.S. overseas military presence in the world and a critical anchor for regional stability.
What Will You Do?
π¬ Conduct research on issues shaping Japanese domestic politics, U.S.-Japan relations, and U.S. strategy in the Indo-Pacific region
βοΈ Draft research memos, presentations, reports, and event summaries for programme staff
ποΈ Provide logistical and administrative support for programme events and research projects
ποΈ Perform general office support tasks across the Japan Chair team
π―π΅ Utilise Japanese-language sources to support original research and analysis

Japan’s strategic importance has grown dramatically in recent years β in 2022 Japan announced its largest defence budget increase since World War II, committing to double defence spending to 2% of GDP. This shift is reshaping the entire Indo-Pacific security architecture and generating intense policy debate in Washington, Tokyo, and beyond.
Who Can Apply?
π At least a college junior, graduate student, or recent graduate in Japan studies, International Affairs, Political Science, or a related field
π Minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 U.S. scale (or equivalent from a non-U.S. institution)
βοΈ Must be legally eligible to work in the United States
π Demonstrated interest in the Indo-Pacific region and familiarity with Japanese foreign and defence policy
π―π΅ Ability to conduct research using Japanese-language original sources is required
βοΈ Strong communication, research, and writing skills in English
πͺ Able to work independently and within a team, managing multiple projects under tight deadlines
π» Proficiency with Microsoft Office
Compensation
π΅ $18.00/hour β current undergraduate students
