The Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (AMTI) at CSIS is one of the world’s leading platforms for analysis and policy exchange on maritime security in the Asia-Pacific β tracking territorial disputes, monitoring military activity, and cutting through misinformation in some of the world’s most contested waters. This paid summer internship in Washington D.C. offers a rare opportunity to contribute directly to high-impact research, multimedia publications, and social media content on South China Sea, East China Sea, and Indian Ocean issues.
π Did You Know? The South China Sea is one of the world’s most strategically contested bodies of water β carrying an estimated one-third of global shipping trade annually and sitting at the centre of overlapping territorial claims by multiple nations. Organisations like AMTI use satellite imagery, open-source data, and expert analysis to track developments in real time and promote evidence-based policy dialogue.
What Will You Do?
π¬ Contribute to a variety of long-term research projects on maritime security and Asia-Pacific geopolitics
π° Help compile and prepare AMTI Features β in-depth analytical publications released every 2 to 4 weeks
π± Contribute to the programme’s social media presence, helping communicate complex policy issues to a broader audience
ποΈ Provide general programme support across the fast-paced, dynamic AMTI team
π Potentially contribute to web content management and multimedia products published on the AMTI platform
πΊοΈ Apply GIS or data visualisation skills if available to support map-based analysis and publications

Who Can Apply?
π At least a college junior in good standing, an advanced student, or a recent graduate from an accredited institution
π Minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 U.S. scale (or equivalent from a non-U.S. institution)
βοΈ Must be legally authorised to work in the United States
π Strong foundation in Asia-Pacific studies, international relations, security studies, and/or maritime law
βοΈ Excellent research and writing skills in English β a writing sample on Asian maritime issues is strongly recommended
πΊοΈ Deep understanding of the political climate, history, and legal/security issues of the Asia-Pacific, South China Sea, East China Sea, and Indian Ocean
π» Proficiency with Microsoft Office required; knowledge of web design, content management, social media, and/or GIS is a strong plus
π Priority given to candidates pursuing or holding a master’s degree and those able to commit to a full internship period
Compensation
π΅ $18.00/hour β current undergraduate students
π΅ $19.00/hour β candidates holding a bachelor’s degree
π΅ $20.00/hour β candidates holding a master’s degree
