Organised by the EUโJapan Centre for Industrial Cooperation, this eight-month paid traineeship combines cultural immersion, professional growth, and cross-cultural learning โ helping future engineers and scientists build global careers.
๐ง What Is Vulcanus in Japan?
Launched in 1997, the Vulcanus in Japan programme runs from August 2026 to March 2027 and includes:
๐ A seminar on Japanโs culture and business environment
๐ฃ๏ธ A two-month intensive Japanese language course
๐ญ A six-month industrial traineeship with a leading Japanese company
๐ฏ Programme Objectives
โ Learn about advanced Japanese technologies and industrial innovation
โ Gain practical skills through a real traineeship experience
โ Immerse yourself in Japanese culture and business practices
โ Develop cross-cultural communication and teamwork skills
โ Build a strong foundation for an international engineering career
๐ฐ Financial Support
๐ธ Up to โฌ9,200 total support per participant:
โฌ8,200 for the main programme and compulsory activities โฌ1,000 for the optional โEyes on Japanโ group assignment ๐ Accommodation is fully provided by the host company ๐ฉบ Insurance coverage is included for the entire stay
๐งฉ Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible, applicants must:
๐ช๐บ Be a citizen of an EU Member State or a country associated with the Single Market Programme (SME Pillar)
๐ Be enrolled at a university in one of those countries until at least June 2026
โ๏ธ Study engineering or scientific fields such as computer science, mechanical, chemical, electrical, civil, physics, biotechnology, or related disciplines
๐ Be between the 4th year of university and final PhD year
๐ฃ๏ธ Have good command of English
๐ Be available for the full 8-month programme

โ๏ธ Clear motivation and adaptability to living abroad
โ๏ธ Demonstrated interest in Japan and EUโJapan cooperation
โ๏ธ Quality of recommendation and motivation letters
โ๏ธ Compatibility with available host company placements
โ๏ธ Priority for candidates without previous experience in Japan
