The Vulcanus in Japan programme offers an incredible opportunity for engineering and science students from across Europe to gain hands-on experience in top Japanese companies — while exploring one of the most inspiring cultures in the world! 🇯🇵

Organised by the EU–Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation, this eight-month paid traineeship combines cultural immersion, professional growth, and cross-cultural learning — helping future engineers and scientists build global careers.

🧠 What Is Vulcanus in Japan?

Launched in 1997, the Vulcanus in Japan programme runs from August 2026 to March 2027 and includes:

🎌 A seminar on Japan’s culture and business environment

🗣️ A two-month intensive Japanese language course

🏭 A six-month industrial traineeship with a leading Japanese company

🎯 Programme Objectives

💰 Financial Support

💸 Up to €9,200 total support per participant:

€8,200 for the main programme and compulsory activities €1,000 for the optional “Eyes on Japan” group assignment 🏠 Accommodation is fully provided by the host company 🩺 Insurance coverage is included for the entire stay

🧩 Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible, applicants must:

🇪🇺 Be a citizen of an EU Member State or a country associated with the Single Market Programme (SME Pillar)

🎓 Be enrolled at a university in one of those countries until at least June 2026

⚙️ Study engineering or scientific fields such as computer science, mechanical, chemical, electrical, civil, physics, biotechnology, or related disciplines

📚 Be between the 4th year of university and final PhD year

🗣️ Have good command of English

🕐 Be available for the full 8-month programme

🏆 Selection Criteria

✔️ Strong academic record and regularity in studies

✔️ Clear motivation and adaptability to living abroad

✔️ Demonstrated interest in Japan and EU–Japan cooperation

✔️ Quality of recommendation and motivation letters

✔️ Compatibility with available host company placements

✔️ Priority for candidates without previous experience in Japan
