Are you between 18 and 35, based in an EU or associated country, and ready for a six-month humanitarian aid ESC experience that takes you all the way to Brazil? The Umbúntu Social Project in Alvorada, near Porto Alegre, is a community and cultural space in a low-income neighbourhood — running workshops on capoeira, percussion, handicrafts, edible plant processing, and language teaching, while also practising permaculture, organic farming, and eco-friendly construction. As an ESC volunteer, you will lead and participate in workshops using non-formal education methods, get hands-on with sustainable practices, and contribute to a genuinely meaningful community project in the heart of South America. 🇧🇷 Did You Know? Porto Alegre, the city closest to this volunteering project, is the capital of Rio Grande do Sul — Brazil’s southernmost state and one of the country’s most culturally distinctive regions, shaped by waves of European immigration from Germany, Italy, and Poland. The city has a long tradition of participatory democracy and grassroots social movements, making it a fitting base for a humanitarian aid and community development project like Umbúntu.

What Will You Do?

🥁Participate in and lead community workshops on topics including capoeira, percussion, handicrafts, edible plant processing, and language teaching — using non-formal education methods in a rich intercultural environment

🌱Get hands-on with environmentally sustainable practices — including organic farming, permaculture gardening, eco-friendly construction, and other manual activities at the project site

🌍Contribute to raising awareness about climate change within the local community and encourage discussions around green alternatives and sustainable living

🤝Provide humanitarian aid and support to residents of a low-income district in Alvorada — working directly with community members through the Umbúntu cultural and community space

🎨Foster intercultural exchange by bringing your own background, knowledge, and creative energy into the project — this is a genuine two-way learning experience

🥗Enjoy and prepare healthy food using Umbúntu’s organic produce — sustainability is woven into daily life at the project

💡 Did You Know? “Umbúntu” is derived from the African philosophical concept Ubuntu — often summarised as “I am because we are.” It captures the idea that a person’s identity and wellbeing are fundamentally shaped by their relationships with others and their community. It is a fitting name for a project built entirely around collective learning, cultural exchange, and mutual support in one of Brazil’s most underserved urban communities.

Accommodation, Food & Travel

🏠Volunteers are hosted in a shared flat with hot and cold water, Wi-Fi, a washing machine, and a mix of private and shared spaces

🥗Umbúntu’s focus on organic produce means healthy, sustainable food is part of daily life — volunteers can enjoy and prepare meals using the project’s own produce

🚌Transportation to and from the project is arranged via local bus or Uber — commuting within Alvorada is taken care of

💰Monthly pocket money of €250 provided throughout the placement

✈️Travel support provided in accordance with ESC programme rules

Training & Learning

💻Pre-departure training provided online before you leave home — so you arrive prepared and informed

🌍On-arrival training in Brazil to help you integrate into the community and understand the local context from day one

👤A dedicated mentor supports you daily throughout the placement — ensuring smooth integration and ongoing personal development

📋Mid-term evaluation training after 4–5 months, followed by a final evaluation before departure — structured reflection is built into the whole experience

🔄A follow-up meeting takes place 2–3 months after returning home — supporting your reintegration and continued development

Who Can Apply?

🎂You are between 18 and 35 years old at the time of the placement

🇪🇺You live in an EU Member State or an associated non-EU country — see the eligible countries list below

📅You are available for the full six-month period — commitment to the entire placement is mandatory

🎓You must complete face-to-face pre-departure training before starting the voluntary service — this is a mandatory requirement

🌍You are genuinely interested in humanitarian work, intercultural exchange, and contributing to a community project in Brazil

🌱You want to gain real insight into sustainable practices, community development, and non-formal education in an international context
