Are you passionate about working with young children, drawn to alternative and nature-based pedagogies, and ready to spend a year in the heart of the Belgian Ardennes? The Collectif des Petits Chemins — a non-profit school in Lessive, a village in French-speaking Belgium — is looking for ESC volunteers to support their teachers and care for children aged 2.5 to 11. Daily life involves artistic workshops, forest walks, farm visits, and hands-on learning rooted in the natural environment. Fully-equipped shared house in Rochefort provided, French classes available, and a rich network of ESC volunteers across French-speaking Belgium to connect with. Deadline: 27 April 2026.
🇧🇪 Did You Know? Rochefort is a small town in the Belgian Ardennes — one of the most beautiful and unspoiled natural regions in Western Europe, known for its dense forests, rolling hills, caves, and river valleys. The area is also famous for its Trappist abbey, which produces Rochefort beer — one of the most acclaimed Trappist beers in the world. It is a genuinely special corner of Belgium to call home for a year.
What Will You Do?
👧Support teachers and care for children aged 2.5–5 (kindergarten) or 6–11 (primary school) — Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 16:00, with a shorter day on Wednesdays (08:30–12:00)
🌅Welcome children at the start of each school day and accompany them during breaks — being a warm, consistent presence in their daily routine
🎨Participate in artistic workshops including painting, drawing, weaving, storytelling, singing, and modelling clay — creativity is at the core of this school’s approach
🌲Join outdoor activities — farm visits, forest walks, and free-time activities in the natural environment surrounding the school
💡Design and implement your own personal activity with children after completing the first stage of the project — initiative and creativity are genuinely welcomed here
💡 Did You Know? The “new pedagogies” that this school is built around — including Montessori, Steiner/Waldorf, and Reggio Emilia approaches — all share a common thread: they trust children to be active participants in their own learning rather than passive recipients of instruction. Schools like Collectif des Petits Chemins represent a growing movement across Europe that is rethinking what education can look like when it starts from the child rather than the curriculum.
Accommodation, Food & Travel
🏠Free board and lodging throughout the entire placement — volunteers share a fully-equipped house in Rochefort with up to 4 ESC volunteers in total
🚌Free transport from the shared house to the school is provided — no need to worry about the daily commute
🍳Volunteers take care of their own meals — a monthly allowance and pocket money for personal expenses are provided throughout the placement
✈️Participation is free of charge — travel costs are covered except for any exceptional contribution that may be required under ESC rules
Training & Learning
📚On-arrival and mid-term seminars organised by the French-speaking National Agency of Belgium — structured support throughout the placement
🤝Residential weekends and networking activities with other ESC volunteers on projects across French-speaking Belgium — organised by the support organisation
🏕️Various workshops proposed throughout the year — including a camp leader training for those interested
🇫🇷French language classes available — strongly encouraged, and basic French before arrival is expected
Who Can Apply?
👧You have a benevolent, patient attitude towards young children and are genuinely interested in active and cooperative pedagogical approaches
🌲You are comfortable spending time outdoors and appreciate contact with nature — outdoor activities are a regular part of daily school life here
🇫🇷You are highly motivated to learn French and willing to start learning the basics before arrival — the school environment is entirely French-speaking
🌍You are open to collective international life — living and working in a shared house with other volunteers from across Europe
💡You are open-minded, proactive, and motivated — ready to take initiative and contribute your own ideas to the school community
📋A certificate of good conduct is required for this placement — ensure you can obtain one before applying
