Are you a student or recent graduate with a background or strong interest in gender equality, human rights, or social development β and looking to gain hands-on UN experience in the Western Balkans? The United Nations Resident Coordinator Office in Skopje is looking for an intern to support the Human Rights and Gender Thematic Group, working directly with UN co-chairs and gender focal points across UN agencies in North Macedonia. The role covers meeting coordination, gender data visualisation, joint campaign support, NGO consultations, and stakeholder database management. In-person in Skopje. Unpaid. Deadline: 26 March 2026.
π²π° Did You Know? Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the Balkans β with a history stretching back over 6,000 years. It is also the birthplace of Mother Teresa, who was born there in 1910 when the city was still part of the Ottoman Empire. Today it serves as the base for a significant cluster of UN agencies and international organisations active in the Western Balkans.
What Will You Do?
ποΈSupport the Human Rights and Gender Thematic Group in organising meetings and retreats β including calendar coordination, drafting meeting minutes, and logistical support
βοΈAssist in preparing and implementing joint gender equality campaigns β including developing coordination tools, materials, and dissemination strategies
πAssist in visualising and analysing gender data to support advocacy efforts and UN programming decisions
πSupport UN reporting towards the SWAP Gender Equality Scorecards β a key accountability mechanism for UN system-wide gender performance
π€Help facilitate consultations with local NGOs and support the organisation of meetings and events with external stakeholders
ποΈMaintain and update the Gender Stakeholder Database, ensuring it remains accurate and accessible for the team
π¬Review and analyse relevant documents, strategies, and research related to gender equality and human rights in North Macedonia
π‘ Did You Know? The SWAP (System-Wide Action Plan) on Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women is the UN’s framework for holding all UN entities accountable for their gender equality commitments. Supporting its scorecard reporting β as this intern will do β means contributing directly to one of the most important transparency mechanisms in the entire UN system.
Eligibility & Requirements
πYou are enrolled in or have completed a graduate programme (master’s or PhD level) β OR you are in the final year of a first university degree (bachelor’s or equivalent), preferably in a field related to gender, human rights, social science, or international development
π£οΈFluency in English is required β knowledge of Macedonian and/or Albanian is a strong advantage for this specific position
π»Good knowledge of MS Word, PowerPoint, Teams, and especially MS Excel is required β knowledge of MS Lists or similar tools is desirable
βοΈStudies or active participation in groups or CSO activities related to gender issues is desirable
π―Previous engagement in organising youth activities and the ability to coordinate events or activities with groups of people are desirable assets
πNo professional work experience is required β relevant academic background and motivation are the primary selection criteria

π°This internship is unpaid β all costs related to travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or their sponsoring institution
πIn-person position based in Skopje, North Macedonia β remote arrangements are not available for this role
π»The intern must have access to a personal computer and reliable internet connection β the UN Mission will provide access to necessary software and databases
