With over USD $1.2 billion invested and more than 40,000 young Africans supported so far, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program continues to be one of the largest and most impactful scholarship initiatives in the world.

๐ What the Scholarship Covers

๐ Eligibility Criteria
To qualify, applicants must:
๐น Be citizens of an African country (including African refugees or those forcibly displaced within Africa; dual citizens or permanent residents of the US/Canada/EU/UK are not eligible).
๐น Be academically talented and first gain admission to a UC Berkeley masterโs programme.
๐น Demonstrate leadership potential, ethical engagement, and the ability to inspire positive change.
๐น Have experienced significant barriers to higher education (financial, social, personal, structural, health-related).
๐น Show commitment to community impact through activism, volunteering, social engagement, or professional initiatives.
๐น Intend to return to their home country after completing their degree to contribute to local or continental transformation.
Priority is given to applicants who:
โ Completed their undergraduate degree in Africa
โ Do not already hold a postgraduate degree
โ Have not previously received a Mastercard Foundation Scholarship
๐ Eligible Countries
Citizens of African countries ๐ฟ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ฌ๐ช๐ฌ๐ฐ๐ช๐ช๐น๐ฌ๐ญ๐ท๐ผ (all African nations included).

Based at the Center for African Studies, the program:

๐ Will support 200+ masterโs students through 2030

Applicants who submit early demographic info + 2 referees may be invited for application fee waiver.
