And an island at the crossroads of the Mediterranean migration routes โ where protecting birds is one of the most challenging and meaningful conservation challenges in Europe. BirdLife Malta, coordinated by Associazione Antigรณna, is offering an ESC volunteering placement exclusively for volunteers from Italy โ a full year of environmental education, community engagement, and wildlife conservation work in Malta.

BirdLife Malta is Malta’s leading conservation organisation, working to protect birds and their habitats through education, advocacy, and community engagement. Malta is one of the most challenging contexts for bird conservation in Europe โ sitting at the crossroads of the migration routes of numerous species. This placement offers a genuine springboard into a career in animal and bird conservation.
๐ Three Activity Areas
๐ Organisational and Communication Support
โ๏ธ Write social media articles and posts about birds and the natural environment
๐ Update data and records for the education team
๐ค Provide general support to environmental educators
๐ซ School Awareness Activities
๐ค Deliver talks, educational activities, and seminars in schools for both pupils and teachers
๐ฑ Support the creation of naturalistic gardens in schools
๐ฆ Manage school visits to nature reserves
๐ Public Outreach and Engagement
๐ช Organise public awareness events
๐จโ๐ฉโ๐ง Run family activities related to nature and wildlife
๐ก Participate in fairs and community events
๐ What the Project Provides
๐ Single room close to the coordinating organisation’s headquarters (shared for brief periods only)
๐ก All utilities covered โ electricity, water, gas, and internet
๐ถ โฌ380 per month for groceries and personal expenses
โ๏ธ Full travel reimbursement to and from Italy
๐ Local transport costs covered by the hosting organisation
๐ก๏ธ EU-standard insurance covering all possible risks
๐ 3 official training sessions โ one pre-departure in Italy, one shortly after arrival in Malta, and one at the mid-point of the volunteering
๐ค Who Should Apply
This placement is open to Italian residents only and is ideal for someone who is:
๐ Extroverted, friendly, and enthusiastic about meeting new people and experiencing a different culture
๐ฆ Interested in improving bird, flora, and wildlife identification skills
๐ฟ Passionate about inspiring and educating people about the natural world
๐๏ธ Has administrative, time management, numeracy, and interpersonal skills
๐ Flexible โ including occasional weekend and public holiday work
๐ฃ๏ธ Has good English โ all application materials must be submitted in English
โ A background in environmental education, biology, or communication โ or experience organising nature sessions โ is a bonus
