Are you patient, open-minded, and motivated to work with children of all ages in a school community that takes Estonian culture, folklore, and non-formal learning seriously? Laulasmaa School — a unique institution combining three schools and three kindergartens on the northern Estonian coast — is looking for an ESC volunteer to join their community. Located in the village of Laulasmaa on the shore of Lahepere Bay, just 29 km from Tallinn, the school serves 280 pupils and 126 kindergarten children and prides itself on maintaining Estonian cultural heritage through folklore, crafts, folk dance, choir, and a rich range of non-formal activities. 🇪🇪 Did You Know? Laulasmaa sits on the shore of Lahepere Bay on the Baltic coast of northern Estonia — a region of extraordinary natural beauty characterised by pine forests, sandy beaches, and dramatic sea views. The name “Laulasmaa” translates roughly as “singing land” in Estonian. The area lies within the Lahemaa National Park region, one of the oldest and largest national parks in the Baltic states, making it one of the most scenically remarkable locations for an ESC school placement in all of Northern Europe.
What Will You Do?
🏫Work with both younger and older children across the school and kindergarten — engaging with pupils from age 1 through primary school age in a variety of learning and activity contexts
🎨Support and contribute to the school’s rich programme of non-formal learning activities — folklore, crafts, art, folk dances, choir songs, and music are all part of daily school life at Laulasmaa
🏃Participate in hobby classes, contests, and other projects — contributing your own skills and energy to a school community that genuinely values a broad range of activities beyond the classroom
🌟Help provide varied and engaging activities during school breaks — Laulasmaa School specifically values non-formal learning during these informal moments of the school day
🌍Bring your own cultural background, language, and perspective into the school community — an international volunteer is a living resource for intercultural learning for the children and staff
🤝Actively contribute to the broader school community — being proactive, approachable, and genuinely present in the daily life of a school that serves both primary pupils and very young kindergarten children
💡 Did You Know? Estonia’s singing tradition is one of the most celebrated in the world — the country’s first Song Festival took place in 1869 and the tradition of mass choral gatherings has played a central role in Estonian national identity ever since. The 1988 “Singing Revolution” — in which hundreds of thousands of Estonians gathered to sing forbidden national songs in defiance of Soviet occupation — is one of the most extraordinary examples of peaceful cultural resistance in modern history. Laulasmaa School’s emphasis on choir and folk song places it directly within this remarkable living tradition.
Accommodation, Food & Travel
🏠Suitable accommodation conveniently located near the school — typically a shared apartment or hostel with essential furnishings. Rooms may be private or shared depending on availability, with shared kitchen and bathroom
💰€5 per day pocket money plus a monthly food allowance — volunteers manage their own meals
✈️International travel reimbursed based on set travel budget — task-related local transport covered in full
Training & Learning
📚ESC training cycle organised by the Estonian National Agency — focused on personal development and intercultural learning throughout the placement
🥾Hikes and other social activities organised by the coordinating organisation — opportunities to connect with other ESC volunteers in Estonia and explore the country together
