Are you a youth worker or youth organisation representative who wants to increase recognition of youth work and non-formal learning โ€” in your community, your organisation, or the broader policy environment? Unlocking Doors to Recognition is an Erasmus+ Seminar organised by SALTO South-East Europe and SALTO Training and Cooperation, bringing together 25 practitioners from across Europe and the Western Balkans in Bar, Montenegro. Over three full working days, participants will deepen their understanding of recognition concepts, explore inspiring practices from across Europe, and โ€” most importantly โ€” develop concrete individual strategies and action plans to take recognition forward in their own contexts. Online follow-up support provided after the seminar. Accommodation, food, and travel covered. Deadline: 10 April 2026.
๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ช Did You Know? Bar is a coastal city in southern Montenegro, situated on the Adriatic Sea at the foot of Mount Rumija โ€” one of the most dramatic natural settings in the Western Balkans. The area is home to the ancient olive trees of Stara Maslina, one of which is estimated to be over 2,000 years old and is protected as a national monument. Montenegro became an EU candidate country in 2010 and has one of the most active civil society and youth sector landscapes in the Western Balkans โ€” making Bar a fitting location for a seminar on recognition and youth work development.

What Will You Do?

๐Ÿ“–Deepen your understanding of the key concepts, terminology, and European policy developments related to the recognition of non-formal and informal learning (NFIL) and youth work
๐ŸŒEngage in peer learning about the state of recognition in different countries and environments โ€” supported by inspiring examples of recognition practices from the Western Balkans and across Europe
๐Ÿ”Identify the challenges to recognition that exist in your own context and explore possible solutions and concrete ways forward
๐Ÿ—บ๏ธDevelop your own individual recognition strategy and action plan in small peer-support “recognition teams” โ€” based on your specific context, interests, and organisational capacity
๐ŸคBuild lasting peer-learning relationships and a network with other youth work organisations actively working to advance recognition in their environments
๐Ÿ’ปReceive online follow-up support for your recognition team after the seminar โ€” and participate in a follow-up online meeting on 18 September 2026 (10:00โ€“12:00 CEST) to review progress and share developments
๐Ÿ’ก Did You Know? The Youthpass Strategy โ€” which provides the framework for this seminar โ€” was developed by the European Commission and SALTO as a comprehensive roadmap for advancing recognition of youth work and non-formal learning across Europe. It builds on over 15 years of experience with the Youthpass certificate and aims to connect individual learning recognition at project level with broader systemic change at the level of organisations, communities, and national policies. This seminar is one of the first major European events to apply the Strategy in a practical, participant-led format.
