The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is hiring a Legal Officer at the P-3 level in Washington, D.C., on a one-year fixed-term appointment with the possibility of extension. The role provides legal advice on contracts related to US and Canadian funding and operations, and the application deadline is 4 September 2026.
Where This Role Sits
The position is in the Office of Legal Affairs (LEG), which provides legal advice to the Director General, the Deputy Directors General, the Regional and Country Offices, and other departments and offices, ensuring IOM's activities are carried out in accordance with its Legal Framework, Constitution, Staff and Financial Regulations and Rules, IOM instructions and international law.
⚖️ The Office comprises the Office of the Legal Counsel, the Institutional Law and Programme Support Division (LEGPS), the Contract Law Division (LEGCR), the General and Administrative Law Division (LEGGL) and the Regional Legal Hubs. Under the overall supervision of the Legal Counsel and the direct supervision of the Division Head, Contract Law Division, the Legal Officer provides timely, accurate legal advice and facilitates the efficient functioning of the Office.
Responsibilities
📑 Provide legal advice on various types of contracts related to US and Canadian funding and operations, taking into account IOM's legal status, contract templates and rules and regulations.
🧭 Act as focal point within the Office for contract-related matters involving the US and Canada, providing guidance and follow-up as required.
📝 Assist with the development of new contract templates to protect IOM's legal interests, provide legal advice on negotiations and contract-related disputes, and draft and participate in negotiating legal terms and contracts.
🎓 Conduct trainings for IOM personnel on contract law issues, promote LEGCR online resources, and support the Division Head in knowledge management to promote efficiency and effectiveness.

Who Can Apply
🎓 A Master's degree in law, public international law or a related legal field from an accredited institution with five years of relevant professional experience, or a Bachelor's degree in the above fields with seven years of relevant professional experience, is required. Being admitted to practice law in the United States (a US-qualified lawyer) is desirable.
📅 Recent legal practising experience in commercial and contract law and/or dispute resolution, in a private law firm, as in-house counsel in the private sector, within the UN system, or in an intergovernmental organization, is required.
🖋️ Excellent writing skills, proven legal research and contract-review skills, and knowledge of public international law, in particular the law of international organizations, are required.
Language
🗣️ Fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage.
