About the Fellowship

Unique among postdoctoral fellowships, the Cornell Atkinson Postdoctoral Fellowship in Sustainability funds highly motivated recent PhDs to conduct projects under the mentorship of a Cornell faculty host and an advisor from an external partner organization. Fellows hold appointments at Cornell University for up to three years, and each fellow receives individualized and cohort-level support, including the Sustainability Leadership Program's workshops in professional development, career strategy, communications training and collaborative leadership. The Fellowship offers a unique opportunity to engage at the nexus of highly rigorous academic research and real impact in sustainability, working with both a Cornell faculty mentor and a partnering external organization.

Who Can Apply

🎓 Graduate students who have received, or will receive, their Ph.D. within two years prior to the start date of their research.

🔬 Research must be aligned with Cornell Atkinson's four thematic areas: climate risk, energy transitions, food security and One Health.

What's Offered

💶 Fellowships are 3-year, 12-month appointments at Cornell University, providing a salary of $65,000 per year, full Cornell employee benefits, and $12,000 per year for research- and travel-related expenses.

🏡 Postdocs must maintain primary residency in Ithaca, New York, for the duration of the appointment and spend the majority of their time on campus in order to participate in Cornell Atkinson activities. Hybrid and remote appointments are not permitted.
