Sandy beaches. Dunes. A sea under pressure from industrial activity, marine litter, and climate change. And a team of young volunteers from across Europe ready to do something about it. Baltic Sea Guardians is an ESC team volunteering project in Liepฤja, Latvia โ a coastal city on the Baltic Sea โ focused on environmental awareness, citizen science, and hands-on coastal action.
๐ About the Project
The project is coordinated by Allianssin Kehittรคmispalvelut Oy in partnership with Radi Vidi Pats in Liepฤja. Volunteers will work together to raise awareness about the ecological value of the Baltic Sea and the impact of human activities on coastal and marine ecosystems โ through direct action, community engagement, and participatory education.
๐ What You’ll Do
๐งน Coastal clean-up actions in cooperation with local initiatives and municipalities
๐ฃ Create informative posters for residents and visitors raising awareness about the Baltic Sea
๐ Deliver participatory workshops about Baltic Sea ecology and environmental sustainability
๐ฌ Participate in citizen science activities โ including marine litter monitoring and public awareness initiatives
๐ญ Engage in discussions on industrial impact on coastal areas and environmental responsibility
๐ค Support community action โ exploring what individuals and communities can do to reduce negative impact
๐ฅ Take part in Baltic Sea Guardians campfire evenings and evening reflection circles for community building and shared purpose
๐ What the Project Provides
๐ Shared rooms in a simple but comfortable hostel in Liepฤja
๐ฅ Basic vegetarian products provided for cooking together โ with attention to sustainability, local sourcing, and reducing food waste. Dietary needs accommodated where possible. Volunteers participate in cooking as part of daily routines and team-building. Food money provided when the group is not cooking together
๐ฟ Non-formal education methods, reflection, group discussions, and creative approaches integrated into daily activities

๐ค Who Should Apply
Baltic Sea Guardians is looking for volunteers who are:
๐ Interested in environmental topics, sustainability, and community action
๐๏ธ Open to hands-on outdoor activities and teamwork
๐ฌ Comfortable with a basic conversational level of English
๐ฑ Open to intercultural learning and group living
๐๏ธ From fewer opportunities backgrounds โ you are especially encouraged to apply
๐ Aged 18โ30 and residing in one of the eligible countries
โฑ๏ธ Total duration of this and any previous EU volunteering must not exceed 12 months in combination
No prior experience is required โ motivation, curiosity, and willingness to participate are what matter most.
