The European Internal Audit Trainee Programme is a prestigious, one-year paid traineeship jointly delivered by the European Central Bank (ECB) and EU national central banks/supervisory authorities 🇪🇺🏦. This elite programme offers young professionals a unique opportunity to explore how internal audit drives transparency, accountability, efficiency and strong governance within EU institutions.

Trainees spend part of their placement at the ECB headquarters in Frankfurt am Main, Germany 🇩🇪, and the remaining period at a national central bank or national competent authority across the EU — gaining first-hand experience in central banking, supervision, IT audits, risk evaluation and process improvement.

🧭 What You Will Do

As a trainee internal auditor, you will:

  • 📊 Apply data analytics for audit testing
  • 🛠️ Prepare working papers, technical documents & audit reports
  • 🎯 Support audit governance, methodology & quality assurance

🎯 Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • 🎓 A bachelor’s degree or higher in audit, finance, accounting, business, economics, IT, computer science, data science, statistics or similar
  • 🇪🇺 Knowledge of the Eurosystem, ESCB and EU banking supervision
  • 💻 Skills in data analytics tools (Python, Tableau)
  • 🖥️ Good command of MS Office
  • 🇬🇧 English C1 + another EU language B1

Desired qualifications include:

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field
  • Knowledge of the International Professional Practices Framework (IIA)
  • B1 in languages such as German, Spanish, French, Croatian, Italian or Portuguese
  • Experience in auditing, finance, cybersecurity, risk, digital forensics, cloud computing, AI tools, IT controls or quantitative analysis

🏛️ Locations & Structure

You will spend:

  • 📍 Approximately 6 months at the ECB (Frankfurt 🇩🇪)
  • 📍 Approximately 6 months at an EU national institution

The role may include business travel.
Accommodation support is provided at both placement locations.

💶 Grant & Benefits

Trainees receive:

  • 💰 €1,170 monthly grant
  • 🏠 Additional accommodation allowance (or free ECB residence)
  • ✈️ Travel allowance (depending on placement rules)
  • 🛡️ Mandatory sickness & accident insurance (arranged by trainee)
