The European Central Bank (ECB) is offering an exceptional traineeship in the Monetary Analysis Division within the Directorate General Monetary Policy. Based in Frankfurt am Main, Germany ๐ฉ๐ช, this prestigious placement invites young economists, data scientists and analysts to contribute to cutting-edge monetary policy research and analysis at the heart of the euro area economy.
The Division is responsible for monitoring financial and monetary developments across the euro area ๐ช๐บ โ producing core policy analysis submitted to the ECBโs Governing Council. Topics include bank lending conditions, money and credit flows, financial accounts, climate-related transmission risks, digital assets and central bank digital currencies.
As a trainee, youโll be integrated into a 40-person expert team using advanced datasets, econometric modelling, data visualisation techniques and large-scale coding workflows to support real-world policy decisions.
๐ผ Your Role
During this traineeship, you will:
- ๐ Work with macro, micro and high-frequency datasets
- ๐งฎ Run econometric analyses with Python, R, Stata or MATLAB
- ๐ ๏ธ Maintain and enhance data infrastructure, dashboards and modelling tools
- ๐ง Support economists in daily policy tasks and analytical projects
- ๐ Prepare charts, tables and reports for internal/external publications
- ๐ค Collaborate with economists, analysts and policy teams across the ECB

Essential qualifications:
- ๐ Bachelorโs degree or higher in economics, finance, econometrics, mathematics, statistics, data science, social sciences, computer science or similar
- ๐ป Experience with Python, R, Stata and/or MATLAB
- ๐ Experience with macroeconomic, financial, micro, transaction-level or other large datasets
- ๐ฅ๏ธ Strong MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint)
- ๐ Understanding of monetary policy and macro-financial linkages
- ๐ฌ๐ง English C1 + another EU language B1
Desired qualifications:
- ๐ Masterโs degree or close to completion
- ๐๏ธ SQL or big data analytics tools
- ๐ Visualisation tools such as R Shiny, Plotly/Dash
- ๐ Advanced econometrics: time series, microeconometrics, panel data
- ๐งต Web scraping, text analysis, ML techniques
- ๐ผ Experience with Bloomberg, LSEG/Eikon, Datastream, Haver, BankFocus, Orbis
