The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) is hiring a Planning Officer (Team Lead) at the P-4 level in New York, on a temporary appointment available until 31 December 2026. The role leads a regional team supporting the budgeting, management and implementation of mine action programmes, and the application deadline is 6 September 2026.


Where This Role Sits

Established in 1997, UNMAS works to eliminate the threat posed by mines, explosive remnants of war and improvised explosive devices by coordinating UN mine action, leading operational responses at country level, and supporting the development of standards, policies and norms.

🗺️ The position is located in the Programme Management and Support Section (PMSS) of UNMAS, within the Office of Mine Action and Police (OMAP) in the Department of Peace Operations (DPO) in New York. The Planning Officer reports to the Chief of the Programme Management and Support Section.

What You Would Do

👥 Lead one of the PMSS regional teams as Team Lead, providing support for budgeting, management and implementation of mine action programmes with UNMAS Programme Officers and field staff.

🤝 Coordinate programme management and implementation with other DPO and OROLSI components, UN departments and UN agencies, funds and programmes for the assigned team, and act as a technical resource for UNMAS Programme Officers.

💰 Identify resource requirements, develop cost plans and formulate deployment plans for the assigned team in consultation with the Strategic Planning and Operational Support Section, and ensure effective and efficient use of the Umoja ERP by programme staff.

📊 Monitor and evaluate programmatic and operational effectiveness and effect changes required for improvement, and develop and maintain strategic partnerships with Secretariat and other UN entities as well as mine action stakeholders for the assigned regions.

📝 Coordinate the PMSS periodic reports to United Nations organs and donor countries, provide PMSS inputs for UNMAS submissions to UN budgetary, audit and oversight entities, and provide senior management with talking points, briefing notes and reports.

Who Can Apply

🎓 An advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in business administration, management, political, social or engineering sciences or a related field is required. A first-level university degree with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu.

📅 A minimum of seven years of experience in programme planning, project management or related activity is required, including a minimum of three years in programme management in mine action, security sector reform, stabilization or humanitarian response, and a minimum of two years in a peace or humanitarian field operation in a conflict or post-conflict setting. Experience managing a diverse team and in mine action field programmes is desirable.
