An ESC Volunteering Team is a short group volunteering experience where a team of at least 5 young people from different countries work together on a shared cause for 2 weeks to 2 months. It is one of the friendliest ways into the European Solidarity Corps: shorter than long-term volunteering, done as a group, and with your costs covered. This guide explains what a Volunteering Team is, who can join, how long it lasts, and how to take part.
What Is an ESC Volunteering Team? ๐ฑ
A Volunteering Team is a group volunteering activity carried out by young people together, rather than one volunteer joining a project alone. The team commits to a common goal, works side by side, and makes an impact on the hosting community over a short period. Because it is group-based and short, it is often the perfect first ESC experience.
How Is It Different from Other ESC Activities? ๐
The ESC has a few strands, and it helps to see how they compare:
๐น Individual Volunteering โ you join a hosting organisation on your own, for 2 to 12 months.
๐น Volunteering Team โ you take part as part of a group of at least 5, for a shorter 2 weeks to 2 months.
๐น Solidarity Project โ you and a group design and run your own local project.
So a Volunteering Team sits between the two: it is group-based like a Solidarity Project, but you join an organised activity rather than creating your own.
Who Can Join, and the Group Rules ๐
To take part you need to be:
๐น Aged 18 to 30 at the start of the activity
๐น Legally resident in an eligible country
๐น Registered on the ESC Portal
The team itself has clear rules:
๐ฅ At least 5 participants per activity
๐ Coming from at least 2 different countries (one being an EU or associated country)
โ๏ธ At least a quarter of the volunteers should be resident in a country other than the one where the activity takes place
Not sure you qualify? Check who can apply, the age limits and the eligible countries. Your first step is to register on the ESC Portal.
How Long Does It Last, and Where? โณ
A Volunteering Team runs from 2 weeks to 2 months (up to 59 days, not counting travel days). Activities take place in an EU Member State, an associated country, or an eligible non-associated country. As with all ESC activities, they cannottake place in Belarus or on the territory of Russia.
Remember the lifetime rule: your total ESC volunteering across all activities cannot exceed 12 months.
What Do You Actually Do? ๐ฏ
Team activities focus on a shared theme and hands-on work in the community. Depending on the project, that could mean:
๐ฟ Environmental and nature work
๐จ Cultural and community events
๐ถ Youth and education support
๐ค Social inclusion activities
The exact tasks are set by each project, and everyone in the team contributes together.
What's Covered? ๐ถ
Like other ESC volunteering, a Volunteering Team is designed so cost is not a barrier. You typically get:
โ๏ธ Travel, funded within distance bands
๐ Accommodation and food
๐ถ Pocket money for personal expenses
๐ก๏ธ Insurance for the whole activity
โ ๏ธ Honest note: travel is reimbursed by distance band, so on very long trips it may not cover the full ticket. For the full picture, see is ESC fully funded and how ESC insurance works.

In Short ๐
An ESC Volunteering Team is a short, group-based way to volunteer: at least five young people aged 18 to 30 from different countries, working together for 2 weeks to 2 months, with costs covered.
