The United Nations Secretariat is seeking motivated interns to support project-based activities within the Journal Unit of the Central Planning and Coordination Division of the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management in New York. The Journal Unit is responsible for the daily preparation and publication of the Journal of the United Nations. Published in the six official languages of the United Nations, the Journal provides a comprehensive and historical record of activities at United Nations Headquarters, including meetings, events, agendas and related documentation.

Duties and Responsibilities

The internship is intended to provide successful candidates with an opportunity to gain practical experience and understanding of the work of the Journal Unit. Under the guidance of staff members, interns may participate in learning and project assignments that include:

๐Ÿ“ฐ Learning about the editorial, information management and publication processes associated with the Journal of the United Nations

๐Ÿ”Ž Assisting with research, compilation and organization of information used in projects related to United Nations meetings and events

๐Ÿ“Š Contributing to the review and organization of data used in internal databases, dashboards, training materials and workflow documentation

๐ŸŒ Supporting projects related to information management, multilingual publishing and digital content management

๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ Observing and learning how the Journal Content Management System (JCMS) supports the publication process

๐Ÿ“š Assisting with the preparation and update of reference materials, user guides, standard operating procedures and training resources

๐Ÿค Participating in initiatives aimed at improving knowledge sharing, business processes and user experience

๐Ÿ“ฝ๏ธ Assisting with the preparation of presentations, reports, background materials and project documentation

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Gaining exposure to interactions with Secretariat offices and meeting organizers regarding Journal-related processes and publications, and participating in meetings, discussions and knowledge-sharing activities relevant to the work of DGACM and the Journal Unit

This internship provides participants with practical exposure to the work of the United Nations while developing skills in information management, communications, publishing and conference support activities.

Qualifications and Skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). A field of study closely related to the internship is required. Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Teams.


Languages

Fluency in spoken and written English and French are required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Additional Information

The United Nations does not financially remunerate interns. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. For internships in the United States, interns who are not United States citizens, permanent residents, or currently in the United States on a non-immigrant visa status will be required to obtain a G-4 visa. Applicants who have previously served six months in total as an intern in one or more UN Secretariat entities cannot be engaged as an intern.
