About Dr. Glendon Chase McCormick

Dr. Glendon Chase McCormick was born in Paradise, Nova Scotia and grew up in Granville Centre, Annapolis County. He attended the one-room school in Granville Centre, where his father was a teacher, went on to high school in Annapolis Royal, and then to the University of King's College and Dalhousie University, where he completed his undergraduate degree in Science in 1935. His scientific career led him to study at McGill University, where he achieved a PhD in physics. He taught for a few years in the physics department at McGill before working for the National Research Council in Ottawa, where he specialized in electromagnetic antennae and was a pioneer in the field of weather detection using radar. After his retirement, he continued to write and present scientific papers at the national and international level.

He married Ethel Neish, whom he had met as a young patient at the Sanitarium in Kentville. After his retirement they moved back to Nova Scotia and settled in the small community of Karsdale, Annapolis County. Both Glen and Ethel were active in their community: he was the treasurer and a strong supporter of the Port Wade New Horizons Club, volunteered to help other seniors with their income taxes, and was a strong supporter of Christ Church, Karsdale, serving as its treasurer for many years. His garden brought him much joy in early retirement, and he was well known for his winning roses. Ethel predeceased him in 2003, and Glendon, the last member of his immediate family, died on December 28, 2009.
