Description

Dublin Simon Community works with people who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of becoming homeless across Dublin and the east coast of Ireland. We support people at all stages of homelessness, helping them move towards independence and a place they can call home. Volunteers are at the heart of our work and play an important role across our Emergency Accommodation, Supported Housing, and Client Development services. Working alongside professional staff, volunteers help create welcoming and supportive environments, while organising activities that promote wellbeing, confidence, and community connection for residents and service users. Volunteer placements are available for a minimum of 6 months and up to 12 months, providing a rewarding opportunity to gain valuable experience while making a meaningful difference in peopleโ€™s lives.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

ESC volunteers live in shared accommodation with other volunteers in shared or single rooms. Volunteers come from diverse backgrounds and nationalities, creating a welcoming and multicultural environment. Placements are based in Dublin city centre services, with travel by bus, rail, or bicycle usually taking less than one hour. Volunteers manage their own food shopping and cooking. Dublin Simon Community provides a weekly allowance to support food, travel, and daily living expenses.

Training during the activity

Volunteers receive training throughout their placement, including Fire Safety, Manual Handling, Child Protection, Boundaries, and Safety Intervention training, helping them develop practical skills for their role. Volunteers can also complete a FETAC Level 6 Certificate in Volunteering through Technological University Dublin. Lรฉargas provides arrival and midterm training for ESC volunteers, and Dublin Simon Community supports volunteers in completing Youthpass accreditation to recognise their learning and experience.

Participant profile

We welcome applicants who are 18 or over with an interest in social justice, community development, and understanding issues relating to homelessness. Ideally, participants have a background in or are currently studying social care, social science, or related fields, though this is not essential. We are particularly interested in individuals who are engaged in volunteering and may wish to explore future employment opportunities in the sector following their placement. A strong awareness of professional boundaries and self-care is important, as is a genuine commitment to working respectfully with vulnerable groups. We also welcome volunteers with experience or interest in arts, creativity, and using creative approaches to engage with people in services. We have hosted volunteers from a wide range of countries, including Bulgaria, Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Portugal, Malta, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Hungary, Norway, Poland, and others.
