An international permaculture ecovillage on the island of Gotland. A fire pit area being built by hand. An organic community garden. And a group of 10 young people spending 21 days learning how to live and work in genuine harmony with the land. ReGreen is an ESC team volunteering project at Suderbyn Permaculture Ecovillage in Sweden โ one of the most immersive sustainability experiences available through the ESC programme.
๐ฑ About Suderbyn and the Project
Suderbyn is home to an international community of people who care about the environment and who apply permaculture principles and voluntary simplicity in their everyday lives. ReGreen brings together 10 young volunteers for a 21-day educational, practical, and social adventure โ weaving together three interconnected themes across three weeks.
โ ๏ธ Suderbyn is a vegan community. Participants must be open to following a vegan diet and not consuming any meat during the stay.
โ ๏ธ Flying to the island is not possible. Participants must arrive via green travel โ this is a condition of the programme.
๐ Three Project Themes
๐จ Theme 1: Infrastructure Project
This year Suderbyn is working on improving outdoor spaces โ including the fire pit area and a potential sauna. All construction work will be done according to permaculture principles, as sustainably and naturally as possible, working in harmony with the land.
๐พ Theme 2: Permaculture
Volunteers will explore permaculture design principles and their application in the organic community garden. Tasks include:
๐ฟ Foraging and processing natural materials
๐ณ Forest-garden care and ecosystem understanding
๐ชด Weeding, harvesting, and composting
๐ Developing a deeper connection with the soil, the ecosystem, and the food the land provides
๐ค Theme 3: Personal and Group Development
Working with the community’s NGO RELEARN, volunteers explore the social domain โ personal growth, group dynamics, community building, and sociocracy as a model for collective decision-making.
