The American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship (AU EGLS) empowers outstanding young leaders from underserved communities by providing access to world-class education, leadership development, and global engagement opportunities in Washington, DC. This scholarship covers full tuition, room, and board for two selected scholars each year, plus up to eight partial scholarships worth up to $40,000 per year. Designed for students committed to social impact and community transformation, AU EGLS seeks young changemakers who will use their education to uplift their home countries through leadership, service, and innovation.
Open to non-US citizens who will require a student visa (F-1 or J-1), the scholarship supports students dedicated to civic responsibility, volunteerism, and solving challenges in underserved communities. The program is renewable for four years of undergraduate study, provided scholars maintain strong academic progress. AU considers students from all majors and values candidates bringing diverse cultural, economic, and social backgrounds.
This year, AU introduces AU EGL partial scholarships, offering up to $40,000 per year, selected from applicants who complete the full AU EGL application process. These partial scholarships supplement tuition support, with students providing proof of the remaining required funds.
Eligibility requires strong academic performance, leadership commitment, active community engagement, and graduation no earlier than 2023. Applicants must complete the Common Application + required documents by January 15, 2026, followed by the AU EGL scholarship application and essays. English proficiency test scores (TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo/PTE/Cambridge) must be sent directly from the testing agency. EducationUSA-supported applicants or FLEX/YES alumni may submit supporting documentation through their advisers. Finalists are notified by April 1, 2026.
