🏛️ About the Fellowship

The Knight-Wallace Fellowships provide accomplished journalists from around the world with eight months of immersive study at the University of Michigan, offering two rare gifts: time and resources.

Through this prestigious fellowship, journalists step away from daily deadlines to sharpen their skills, explore innovative ideas, and pursue projects that advance journalism. Each year, up to 20 fellows are selected for this transformative experience in Ann Arbor, USA.


💰 Fellowship Benefits

Selected fellows receive:
💵 $85,000 USD stipend distributed monthly (August–April) for living expenses.
🏠 $5,000 relocation grant and individual relocation support.
💉 Health insuranceuniversity course access, and required workshop participation are covered by Wallace House.
🎓 Access to world-class University of Michigan faculty and resources.
🌎 International travel opportunities to understand global contexts shaping journalism.

🎯 Fellowship Focus Areas

Each fellow develops an individual journalism project, which may focus on:

  • Strengthening newsroom innovation or leadership.
  • Data-driven investigative projects.
  • Journalism ventures and media entrepreneurship.
  • Public policy, health, education, technology, or the environment.
  • Addressing key challenges in reporting, ethics, or media trust.

New Specialized Fellowships for 2026–2027:

  • Great Lakes Local News Fellowship – for journalists focusing on regional reporting and data-driven innovation.
  • Arts Journalism Fellowship – for journalists exploring cross-disciplinary arts reporting and cultural storytelling.

🧭 Program Details

  • Duration: 8 months (late August – April)
  • Location: University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
  • Focus: Independent study + journalism innovation + global learning
  • Cohort: Up to 20 fellows from across the world

✅ Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Have at least five years of professional journalism experience.
  • Be currently working in journalism — either in a newsroom or independently.
  • Work in fields such as reporting, editing, data journalism, visual storytelling, audio production, design, or media entrepreneurship.
  • Be deeply committed to the future of journalism and advancing the profession.

Not eligible:

  • Full-time academics, PR professionals, lobbyists, public advocates, or those pursuing a degree.

Application distinctions:

  • U.S. citizens apply as U.S. applicants (even if working abroad).
  • Non-U.S. citizens apply as international applicants (even if working in the U.S.).
  • A Green Card does not qualify as citizenship.
