The Institute of Science Tokyo, formerly Tokyo Institute of Technology, is now accepting applications for its International Graduate Program, IGP(C), for April 2027 enrolment. This is a chance for international students to pursue a master's, doctoral or integrated doctoral degree taught entirely in English. You do not need to know any Japanese to apply, and once you arrive you have the chance to take Japanese language classes. Founded in October 2024 through the merger of Tokyo Institute of Technology and Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Science Tokyo is Japan's newest national research university, ranked 85th globally in the QS World University Rankings 2026 and 5th in Japan, with two Nobel laureates among its faculty.
What You Can Study
The programme covers a wide range of departments across seven schools, from Mathematics and Physics to Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, and Social and Human Sciences.
๐ Master's Programme (2 years), Doctoral Programme (3 years), and Integrated Doctoral Education Programme (a combined master's and doctoral course)
๐ฌ Some departments offer only master's and doctoral programmes, while others also offer the integrated option
๐งช The Graduate Major in Earth-Life Science is the only major offering the integrated option; the Graduate Major in Materials and Information Sciences and the Graduate Major in Super Smart Society are doctoral-only

The Scholarship and the Costs
Selected candidates may apply for the JASSO Reservation Program for the Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students. This is a monthly scholarship of JPY 48,000, paid from April 2027 to March 2028, over 12 months. To apply for it, you select "JASSO" as your intended scholarship in the online application system and submit an English Proficiency Test Score Report through the separate scholarship application form. Selection for JASSO takes place in February and March 2027. This scholarship is not open to Japanese nationals, and it cannot be combined with other scholarships that do not allow multiple grants.
This is not a full-ride award. Even if you receive the scholarship, you must still pay the enrolment and tuition fees. The enrolment fee is JPY 282,000 and the annual tuition is JPY 635,400, and there is a JPY 30,000 application fee, from which MEXT scholars are exempt. Payment of the enrolment and tuition fees can be postponed upon application and approval.
Who Can Apply
The programme is open to all international students. Japanese citizens who hold a valid long-term visa, such as permanent residence, a student visa or a work visa, in their country of residence may also apply, but working holiday, tourist or short-term visas are not valid. The exact eligibility depends on the programme you choose. For the master's or integrated doctoral programme you generally need to have completed, or expect to complete, 16 years of education outside Japan, or hold a degree equivalent to a bachelor's. For the doctoral programme you need a degree equivalent to a master's. Some routes require an individual assessment of admission eligibility by Science Tokyo, and applicants under certain conditions must contact the Admissions Division for this.
