The International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism for Syria (IIIM) is offering a Social Media Internship in Geneva, Switzerland. Based in the Office of the Assistant Secretary-General, the Social Media Intern helps manage the IIIM's digital communications, from planning content to producing multimedia and analysing engagement. The internship runs 3 to 6 months, full-time and in person, starting September 2026. It is unpaid, and the application deadline is 2 September 2026.
About the Role
The IIIM assists in the investigation and prosecution of persons responsible for the most serious crimes under international law committed in Syria since March 2011. The Social Media Intern reports to the Associate Public Information Officer and supports the Mechanism's external communications and outreach.
Your Key Responsibilities
📱 Assist in managing the IIIM's social media accounts, including LinkedIn, X, Facebook and WhatsApp.
🗓️ Schedule social media content aligned with organisational priorities, campaigns, events and publications.
✍️ Prepare first drafts of social media posts for review by the Associate Public Information Officer and final approval by the Head of Entity.
🎨 Support the development of multimedia content, including graphics, short videos, infographics and other visual assets.
🔎 Conduct daily social media monitoring and prepare summaries of relevant developments and trends.
📣 Support the promotion of events, reports and campaigns through digital channels.
📊 Support the measurement and evaluation of digital outreach, and prepare regular analytics reports and dashboards highlighting trends, KPIs and recommendations.
Who Can Apply
Applicants do not need professional work experience, but a field of study closely related to the internship is required. You must be pursuing or have completed a degree in areas such as Communications, Marketing, International Relations, Development Studies or a related field, and be a student in the final year of a first degree, a Master's or Ph.D. programme, or have completed one. Familiarity with social media platforms and their content formats is required, along with experience using Canva, Adobe Creative Suite or similar tools and knowledge of social media management tools such as Hootsuite.
🗣️ Language requirement: fluency in spoken and written English and Arabic is required; knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.
Important Conditions
This internship is unpaid and full-time (40 hours per week, 8:30 to 17:30, Monday to Friday), and is designed to be conducted in person in Geneva. Interns are responsible for all internship-related costs, including travel, visas, accommodation, living expenses and insurance. Candidates of certain nationalities must obtain a visa to stay in Switzerland; the IIIM provides supporting documents but the visa is the candidate's responsibility. There is no expectation of UN employment upon completion.
