The Gulbenkian Institute for Advanced Study (IGEA) Fellowships 2027/2028 support internationally renowned scholars to conduct free research for a limited period, usually between three and eight months, in a stimulating intellectual environment with few regular obligations. Fellows develop their proposed projects in Lisbon within a diverse community of scholars from different fields and nationalities. The application deadline is 15 October 2026.

About the Fellowships
At IGEA, Fellows develop the projects they applied for in an environment conducive to reflection, concentration and intellectual dialogue. The Institute brings together scholars from different fields of study, with different backgrounds and nationalities, to create a diverse intellectual community that encourages individual, original and high-quality work and reflection. The fellowships are designed to give scholars the time and space to pursue free research, largely removed from regular institutional obligations, for a residency of roughly three to eight months.
Who Is Eligible
The Institute intends to receive internationally renowned academics, mostly active, but will also consider applications from emeritus professors, independent scholars and artists. Applications are accepted in most research fields, provided that they do not have laboratory or experimental requirements and that the proposed work is not predominantly of a practical or applied nature.

How to Apply
Applicants must submit their application individually, accompanied by a curriculum vitae, a brief description of the activities to be carried out during the residency at the Institute, and the names of two people who may be asked for letters of recommendation. To apply, you need a MyGulbenkian account.
Selection and Timeline
Applications are evaluated through a competitive international process based on the quality and originality of the proposed work and its fit with the spirit and intellectual environment of the Institute. The evaluation is carried out by the Advisory Council of IGEA. Offers of fellowships are made to selected candidates from the end of January of the following year.
