🔷 Activity Details

Description

Based in the Kano Plains of Western Kenya, this placement supports early childhood education in low-income communities. Volunteers work alongside local teachers at Ahero Community Resource Center and nearby private pre-primary schools, helping strengthen children’s physical, cognitive, and emotional development through play-based learning, literacy support, and creative activities. The focus is on capacity building and sharing skills that contribute to sustainable, long-term improvements in education. Volunteers support the daily activities of preschools, daycare centres, and kindergartens, mainly working with children aged 3–6. The centre’s kindergarten serves around 90 children who are affected by poverty, orphanhood, or HIV/AIDS. They receive free education and meals during the day and return home in the evening to their caregivers or guardians.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

Our volunteers will be accommodated either in a volunteer house or in a rented space near the project location. In the accommodation, water and electricity will be available. Volunteers will cook their breakfast and dinner and lunch will be provided at the working sites. Transportation to and from the projects will be either by walking or using moto bikes.

Training during the activity

This opportunity is part of the RISE project (Reinforcing Inclusion through Solidarity and Empowerment), through which volunteers support inclusion, empowerment, and capacity building in vulnerable communities. They take part in field activities, awareness-raising, and capacity-building actions, while developing transversal and intercultural skills in an international humanitarian context. Volunteers also receive orientation, safeguarding and role-specific training, mentoring, local language and intercultural learning, and pre-departure preparation.

Participant profile

Candidates must be 18 to 35 years old, reside in one of the eligible countries (EU Member State, North Macedonia, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Turkey), have completed the compulsory Humanitarian Aid Volunteering training and not have participated before in individual Humanitarian Aid Volunteering. When adding together this new volunteering opportunity and any previous participation in EU volunteering programmes, the total duration cannot exceed 12 months. Kindergartens teaching is often under-resourced with a genuine need for support. Volunteers should have an open mind and flexible attitude for working in a new and different environment. Volunteers need to be flexible, energetic, open-minded and have a passion for working with children. You should also be proactive and have the ability to take initiative. Previous experience in working with children is a bonus.
