WorldFish is an international research organization working to transform aquatic food systems to reduce hunger, malnutrition, and poverty. It collaborates with international, regional, and national partners to co-develop and deliver scientific innovations, evidence for policy and knowledge to enable equitable and inclusive impact for millions who depend on fish and other aquatic foods for their livelihoods and nutrition. WorldFish is seeking to engage an intern to support the Aquatic Animal Genetics Team in Penang, Malaysia. The candidate will work as part of an interdisciplinary team with expertise in quantitative genetics, molecular biology, aquaculture systems, aquatic animal health, and dissemination programs.
Key Responsibilities
๐งซ Support local staff in the collection of biological samples when necessary
๐งฌ Run DNA extractions and quantification, prepare PCR, and other molecular lab tests needed
๐ฌ Troubleshoot and develop PCR/qPCR protocols for specific pathogens
๐ Keep records of all experiments in a dedicated laboratory book
๐งฐ Assist in the inventory and maintenance of the lab facility
๐งช Assist in experimental work and data collection during the experiment
๐ Support sampling activities for genetic and health surveillance programs
๐งผ Assist in maintaining proper hygiene and biosecurity practices at the facility

Requirements
๐ The candidate will either have obtained or currently be working toward a Bachelor of Science or higher degree in Fisheries and Aquaculture or a related field
๐ Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
๐ Strong organizational skills
๐ Able to work effectively in a team with good interpersonal and communication skills
๐ Willingness to work in both laboratory and hatchery environments, sometimes under field conditions
๐ Ability to record, organize, and enter data accurately (for example Excel or similar tools)
