About UNOCT

UNOCT provides leadership on the General Assembly counter-terrorism mandates entrusted to the Secretary-General; enhances coordination across the 46 Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact Task Force entities to ensure balanced implementation of the four pillars of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy; strengthens the delivery of UN counter-terrorism capacity-building to Member States; improves visibility, advocacy and resource mobilization; and ensures due priority is given to counter-terrorism and the prevention of violent extremism across the UN system. This assignment is for its Madrid programme office, in particular the Vulnerable Targets Programme, under the supervision of a staff member of the Programme.

What You'll Do

๐Ÿ“ Assist in drafting and preparing background documents, reports, issue briefs, talking points, articles and presentations.

๐Ÿ—’๏ธ Attend and summarize conferences and meetings.

๐ŸŽช Support the organization of meetings, conferences and side events to strengthen engagement with UN system partners.

๐Ÿ”Ž Assist in data collection and conduct research and analysis on relevant topics.

๐Ÿ—‚๏ธ Assist in maintaining databases and support the review of key publications.

๐Ÿ“š Assist in preparing training and learning events and other capacity building initiatives.

Interns observe all applicable rules and directives, provide the office with copies of materials they prepare (with property rights vesting in the UN), respect the impartiality and independence of the UN, maintain confidentiality of non-public information during and after the internship, and refrain from conduct incompatible with the UN.

Who Can Apply

๐ŸŽ“ Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).

๐Ÿ“˜ Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent).

Experience with Word, Excel and PowerPoint, a demonstrated interest in the work of the UN, and the ability to interact with people of different cultural backgrounds are required. A closely related field of study is required, with proof. Applicants who have previously served six months as a UN intern, or who are children, siblings or children-in-law of an active UN Common System staff member, cannot be engaged. Languages

Fluency in spoken and written English is required. Fluency in French is a strong asset.

The Details

๐Ÿ“ Location: Madrid, Spain. Work location is flexible (hybrid or in person).

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Expected duration: 3 months, extendable to 6 months. Desired start date 1 September 2026 or sooner, full time (35 hours per week).

๐Ÿ’ผ This internship is unpaid. The UN does not remunerate interns; travel, visas, accommodation and living costs are the responsibility of interns or sponsors. All applicants must be authorized to work from the country where the internship is undertaken and submit proof of visa and/or work authorization before starting.
