🔷 Activity Details
Description
Our organization's main purpose is the conservation of the natural environment of Thrace by monitoring birds of prey as key indicators of biodiversity, while also promoting projects that support the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature. Volunteering activities include the restoration of the National Park of Dadia–Lefkimi–Soufli, monitoring of vultures and other birds of prey in Thrace, and assessing the impact of wind farms on birds. Volunteers also assist in the promotion and testing of alternative methods to reduce human–wildlife conflicts, support and participate in various educational and awareness events, actions, and projects, and contribute to data management, map creation, and the analysis of camera trap photos. Additional tasks involve assisting anti-poison dog unit patrols in detecting poison baits and poisoned animals, supporting sampling and transmitter fitting on vultures, monitoring bird locations using transmitters, and helping in the rescue of injured raptors
Accommodation, food and transport arrangements
Accommodation is provided in a fully equipped house, which includes: 4 bedrooms with 6 single beds, 1 living room, 1 kitchen, 2 bathrooms, 3 balconies, and both a front and back yard. The house is equipped with electrical appliances such as a washing machine, fridge-freezer, electric stove, and air conditioner. We provide €5 per day for food expenses and €7 per day as pocket money. The Society’s office is located in Dadia, just a 5-minute walk from the house. Additionally, there is a bus service that runs three times a day to a nearby small town, where there are connections to other cities
Training during the activity
Participants will gain an understanding of ecosystem functioning, conservation, and management through fieldwork and implemented actions. They will develop skills in using specialized software, organizing awareness events, and working in a scientific team. The project also offers the chance to learn Greek via OLS and experience life in a small, local community, enhancing both teamwork and intercultural communication skills.
Participant profile
We accept all candidates without any form of discrimination. Additional qualifications include a valid driving license (Category B) and a degree in Biology, Forestry, Ornithology, Environmental Science, or Veterinary Medicine.
