UNICEF works in over 190 countries and territories to save children's lives, defend their rights, and help them fulfil their potential, from early childhood through adolescence. In Mozambique, UNICEF is supporting efforts to strengthen public financial management and improve education service delivery in Nampula and Zambรฉzia provinces, promoting budget transparency, accountability, community participation, and evidence-based decision-making. To support these initiatives, UNICEF seeks two interns, one based in Nampula and one in Zambรฉzia.

Main Tasks

Under the supervision of the Social Policy Officer, the intern will contribute to a structured learning assignment focused on budget transparency, school accountability, and community engagement.

Budget Transparency and Public Information

๐Ÿ“„ Assist in developing citizen-friendly versions of planning and budgeting documents to improve public understanding of PESOD and education financing

๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ Support the design of simplified communication materials explaining resources allocated to schools and expected results

๐Ÿ“‹ Contribute to public information templates, school transparency boards, and disclosure tools for schools and local authorities

๐Ÿ“š Support documentation of good practices and lessons learned on budget transparency

Social Accountability at School Level

๐Ÿซ Support the development and testing of school-level accountability and transparency tools

๐Ÿ” Assist in assessing how schools communicate information on resources received and activities implemented

๐Ÿ“Š Support collection and analysis of information on transparency practices adopted by schools and School Councils

๐Ÿค Contribute to identifying opportunities to strengthen public disclosure and accountability mechanisms

Community Engagement and Social Accountability

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Support engagement with School Councils, Parent Associations, and community representatives

๐Ÿ“ Assist in documenting community perspectives on transparency and service delivery

๐Ÿ“ฃ Support awareness-raising activities to strengthen community participation and oversight

Data Collection, Analysis and Knowledge Management

๐Ÿ“ˆ Support the collection, compilation, and analysis of data on education financing, transparency, and service delivery

๐Ÿ—„๏ธ Assist in maintaining project monitoring databases and analytical tools

๐Ÿ“‘ Contribute to briefing notes, reports, presentations, and knowledge products

๐Ÿš— Support field visits and monitoring missions in project districts

Learning Objectives

By the end of the internship, you will have gained practical experience in public financial management, budget transparency and citizen-friendly budgeting, education sector planning and financing, social accountability and community engagement methodologies, the monitoring and reporting of development programmes, and data analysis for policy and programme decision-making.

Minimum Requirements

๐ŸŽ“ Be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree programme, or have graduated within the past two years

๐ŸŽ‚ Be at least 18 years old

๐Ÿ“š An academic background in Economics, Public Administration, Public Policy, Public Finance, Development Studies, Governance, Statistics, Education Planning, Social Sciences, or a related field

๐Ÿ“ˆ Excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent records

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Proficiency in English (a UNICEF working language) and fluency in Portuguese is required

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ง No immediate relatives working in any UNICEF office

Desirable Qualities

๐Ÿ“Š Knowledge of public planning and budgeting processes, and an understanding of governance, transparency, and accountability issues

๐Ÿ” Experience in data collection, research, or analysis

๐Ÿค Strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills, and proficiency in Microsoft Office

๐ŸŒ Experience working with schools, communities, youth groups, or civil society organisations
